King Crimson : The Power To Believe

Best album to be released in the last 20 years, AFAIC

Don't know about that, but still pretty damned good; definitely not as navel-gazing as I was expecting, a blend of prog, ethereal, and chill that could have been uneasy and awkward but surprisingly wasn't and I was actually interested enough to keep listening. I may buy this.

I'm in the same boat, only my hate boner is for "Last Christmas".

The Mothersons (LotL spin-off) have been doing a musical Advent calendar, a different cover each day. I predicted days ago that today's song was going to be "Last Christmas", and I was not wrong...

Thankfully covers don't count for Whamageddon, so I only need to make it another 11 hours without hearing the original in order to claim victory.

Lori, I'll grant that "the best thing in 20 years" is a bold and indefensible claim. But damn, this rekkid is excellent.

From the four-part title song which is distributed among the other tracks in the CD to the range and variety of sounds, to the beauty and the tension that's been Robert Fripp's calling card since the late '60s - it's all there, it all works cohesively, and it's all ... different. And I love music that works, but is different!

It captivates right from the intro which is presented in a creepy a-cappella-
"She carries me through days of apathy. She washes over me. She saved my life...in a manner of speaking...when she gave me back the power to believe." Then it ranges through a series of carefully constructed tempo shifts, key changes and restless time signatures - yet it never loses its melodic appeal.

It may be something of a "Marmite" album, i.e. love-it-or-hate-it, but the sheer musicianship and the excellent performances and the disdain for musical conventions have a special appeal.

I have a number of favorites from the last 20 years. They're all excellent, yet this IMO album stands above them all.

Hey, Litfan, you out there? We haven't heard from you for a while. I hope all is well, and will be curious to know your thoughts on The Power To Believe.

Sadly, I got Whammed pretty early this year.

To counter all this Christmas cheer, I'm playing
Loreena McKennitt - To Drive The Cold Winter away

Festive with a low sugar content

Dream Theater : Scenes From A Memory

I'm not the world's biggest Dream Theater fan, but I consider this and Six-Degrees to be their best, and enjoy re-visiting them every few years.

Arena : Pepper's Ghost

Purists prefer their older work - but this is my favorite of theirs. I saw them playing most of this on stage at a ROSfest several years ago. Great show.

Therion : Gothic Kabbalah

I'm re-spinning a bunch of old favorites, as I make recommendations for a friend who's interested in what he called "that complicated kind of music you like" :D

I'm more a "Vovin/Secrets of the Runes" guy, but Gothic Kabbalah is nice too. Sounds more like Ayreon than Therion though.

Hey litfan! Good to see you shambling by! :)

My suggestion in regards to "complicated music" would be
While Heaven Wept - Vast Oceans Lacrymose (or thereabouts)
A band mainly known for bittersweet Doom Metal plays Fates Warning. Weird but effing awesome.

Touch - Eberhard Weber, et all

The first time that I saw these guys live, I was sitting in the front row, in a small auditorium, with Charlie Mariano only about three metres away. Jon Christensen was about a metre behind him. I worried that Charlie Mariano might be deaf by the time they finished the set. :)

Right now, it's ......

Si Tu Savais

One cut from her album, Connie Evingson and The Hot Club of Sweden

(With an apology to Mick and the boys ...)
I know it isn't rock'n'roll, but I like it.

I agree with your preferences. But I want to make my suggestions a approachable as possible, then ease him into the slightly more complex stuff if it catches.

E.g. Opeth - Blackwater Park, not Still Life. I.e. not quite as good, but a lot more approachable.

And I'm pointing him at Ayreon's Universal Migrator double CD.

Howdy Musical litsters! Happy Holidays as you choose to keep it to each and all of you!

I've been listening to Grace Kelly. No, not that Grace Kelly. A young jazz saxophonist and singer. A new discovery for me. I can live without the singing, but her horn-playing is well worth a listen. :)
