What are the demographics of the readers here?

I guess I thought women were bigger readers of this stuff, but now I'm not so sure. Is it mostly older men who read the stories here?

I'd have thought experienced writers here would have some sort of feel for it.

Good question...

JS, I have wondered the exact same thing.

I think SR is right in that it would be almost impossible to determine with any reasonable accuracy. The best you could do would be to go off of the profile information, but since that's all self-reported and doesn't capture the legions of anonymous readers/visitors, that information is about as good as a complete guess :)

How? They have no access to the true gender of any one person reading here (other than themselves--and sometimes they might quesiton that). And no one has a reliable statistic for the total number of those who are reading here.

It's sort of a time waster to speculate this one.

It's hard to 'feel' over the interwebz. You cast your pearls before the unseen readers and hope that it gets read. Quite possibly a story can get put up and have no reads at all!

There's absolutely no way to tell, but judging by sone of the feedback we get on stories, it would seem to be a mix of socially inept post-adolesents, frustrated middle aged husbands and a smattering of your average kooks, wierdos, kinks and pervs. :D

I'm not talking about statistics. I'm talking about hunches. Surely, over time, the comments, ratings, & view counts must add up to some sort of fuzzy picture, especially for an author who submits work in a variety of styles and can compare/contrast the responses.

One other factor for you to ponder, is where are you posting your stories? I'm sure the demagraphics would be totally different for a story posted under romance vs. nonconsent/reluctance. Just hope to totally confuse you, as pointed out, this question is nothing to lose sleep over -- maybe worth a conversation over a beer with friends.

The Alexa stats are pretty interesting. Although they are obviously not completely accurate due to sampling bias and the problems of self-reporting, I guess the following can be gelaned:

- The majority of people accessing lit are men (I guess no real surprise)

- Middle-aged people are a huge part of the demographic compared to other sites on the web.

It is hard to tell with so many Anonymous readers. Also depends on the category. I feel incest is mainly men, but knw there are quieta few women who follow the more romantic storylines.

I think there is really no way to tell. The site has such a wide variety of 'fetishes' and categories that it attracts readers of all ages and sexual preferences.

This ranks with angels tapdancing on the pinheads. No way to tell, everything is self-reported and impressionistic. And, in any event, if someone reads my stuff and likes it, I don't give a flying fuck who they are.

By the way plt, all you have to do is google "literotica demographics".

Those sort of statistics are likely becoming more accurate by the day thanks to social networking. Facebook is everywhere like a frikkin' virus, and huge chunks of the population post everything there, mindless of their privacy or security.

If there's Facebook-linked items on a page, there's a good chance that information is being broadcast for the statistic gathering site to mine.
