The US (and UK) electrical grids are too fragile to deal with a major weather related problem, without the need for foreign intervention.

There needs to be a significant improvement in the infrastructure of the electrical grid in both countries. Too much of the equipment is decades old and unable to cope with overloads, exceptional peak demand, and natural disasters.
