Just watched the movie "Flyboys".

Out effing standing movie.

The acting wasn't the best although it was good.

The cinematography was outstanding as were the flight sequences.

Well worth watching if you are in the least interested in the Fighter Pilots in World War One.

Gee. I thought (from the ads, I haven't seen it and won't until it reaches cable) that the dog fights had more planes in them than all of WWI actually had combined. Looks dopey to me.

Maybe I'll check it out, Cat.

I'm always worried about war movies. They so often get things wrong.

One thing bugs me a little about the trailers. I was under the impression that the movie is about the Lafayette Escadrille. Yet it looks like the planes in it are Camels. they should be flying Spads.

Might just be my limited knowledge of the movie though.

Saw a preview for that last night, and filed it away as a movie to watch when the family is out. Not something my family would enjoy.

I enjoy stories of early aviation. Did you know the first detailed information about the Wright Brother's flying was published in a newsletter for Bee Keepers?

Did you know the first public flight of an airplane, the first airplane sold to another, the development of retractable landing gear, the seaplane, ailerons, first to drop bombs or fire a gun from a plane.....wasn't the Wright Brothers?

i watched it last night, too. Not historically accurate as per the planes and such, and the acting was fairly cheesy, but i'd actually watch it again.

Actually the planes they were flying in the ealy part of their fighting were Neuports.

If I recall they later went to Spads, but I'm not sure. I'll have to dig out some of my books to check that point out.

Ah, that would make sense.

Maybe it's the poster I'm familiar with at my local Blockbuster.

It only shows the front of the planes. I notice the radial engines and I can't really make out the tail or where the gun(s) are placed. Most of the Nieuports had Lewis guns on the upper wings.

Also the Fokker Triplanes in the background make me think of Camels. They were, as I recall, contemporary with the Camel.

Despite my nits, I almost rented it tonight. No copies available though.

You are right, cat.

When the Lafayette Escadrille (originally called the Escadrille Amaricane) began op's, they flew Nieuport's. As Rob said, they were originally armed with a Lewis MG on the top wing. It only held 47 rounds in drum feed, and they changed drums in flight!

In late 1916 they changed to S.P.A.D.'s with two synchronized cowl mounted MG's. Vicker's I think and belt fed.

I'll have to rent this one, but if you all want to see a great WW One av. movie, try 'Wing's', the one Howard Hughes made in the 30's. Cheesy acting but the flight scenes are spectacular! And it's all real, no computer graphics. Stunt pilots died making it.

Squadron Leader TE, out.

Great, I'll have to look for it.
