My camera (Canon PowerShot A50) seems to produce only bmp pics. Big ones. Or at least that's all i have been able to pull off it.

I've tried posting pics taken by that cam to Lit before and can't seem to get any of the pics small enough to post.

For example, there's one i want to post which is 349 X 452 pixels but 473,750 bytes. Too big.

Questions:
1. Can the format be changed to jpg?
2. If so, how? Please, please remember that i am a **total** incompetent with regard to this kinda stuff. Basically, i just want to turn my puter on and have it work every time; every single bit of fancy jargon is wasted on me.
3. If not, is there some service i can send my pics to in order to have them changed in format? It would have to be a service that allowed the sorts of pics one might be posting here, you know.

I am planning to take some pics this weekend and want to be able to post them here but am afraid i'll not be able to, just like with the others i've tried.

I don't know what kind of software came with your camera to enable you to download to your pc.

But you need a photo programme, that enables you to save any image you display into another format.
I use MGI photosuite. In that, under the "save as " function there is a drop down menu, to save any displayed image into a variety of formats.

I'll check on that "save as" function when i dl more pics but what can be done with the pics i already have? Anything?

And what if i don't have a "save as" choice?

And where do i get "a photo programme, that enables you to save any image you display into another format."

hello cymbidia

I am only answering this because WH doesn't seem to be online right now.

you can open your Bitmap pic in the Windows/Accessories/Paint program. (or any other program you prefer)

Then you can save the pic as a jpeg file in from the Paint program. Then close the Bitmap file and open the jpg file. You can then resize the pic to the appropriate size. I like pics around 300X400 for this board.

Once the pic is converted to jpg, the file size "should" be small enough to post without a problem.

Well thru trial and error, I've saved bmp images as gif's or jpg images and vice versa. Saving them as jpg would also help to solve the size problem. I think it takes less bytes to save a jpg image than the corresponding bmp or gif.

Alternatively you need a friend to email them to, who can convert them for you.

I must have an ancient version of MS Paint then. I can only "save as" in five different kinds of bitmap

Ditto! I have been wanting to upload a pic here but I can't do it either since it is way too big. I tried to convert it but, alas, my program is old too and it only offers different.bmps as options.

Then I tried converting it in adobe- and it did allow me to switch to jpeg but it won't let me manipulate the size- without totally cutting off the parts I want! LOL It is akin to trying to slice a piece of cheese using a machete!

What am I doing wrong? How can I size the picture so I can use it here?

Almost all of the image processing programs that come with cameras or scanners can "save as" JPG, GIF, TIF, and BMP.

Just open the image you want to convert, and select Save As and it will save a copy of the file in JPG format. It may even allow you to set the jpg comression amount if you've got a borderline file that won't come down to under 100K

If you want a "real" photo processing program, got to http://www.jasc.com and download the trial version of paintshop pro. once you get it installed, go to the file menu, and select "batch conversion" That will convert 100+ BMP files to JPG files in about thirty seconds.

It beats opening a file, saving it as jpg, opening the next, saving that as jpg, etc, etc, ad nauseum.

Last time I checked, the registered version was $125 or so, but I got my copy (with a printed user manual) for $99.00 at CompUSA.

Lest people think I'm a salseperson for JASC, Adobe PhotoShop or PhotoDeluxe are very good photoprocessing programs as well that also can handle many different formats. They just don't do it as simply or comprehensively as PSP does.

If all else fails, send the pic to me, and I'll convert it for you.

Thanks, all.

As always, i'm very impressed by the high level of technical knowledge some among us possess. There are genuinely genius puter people here at Lit.
