1.Over the last decades, the global spread of neoliberalism has been paralleled by a steady decline in religious belief, at least in Western countries.
The dynamics behind the global spread of neoliberalism are pretty clear to most (unregulated capitalism with policies set almost exclusively by banks and so on).
On the other hand, there are many reasons that might account for the decline in religious belief (scientific advances, as a reaction to the bigotry of several religious institutions or so on).
On top of that, militant secularism / the new atheism and faith in the big government as opposed to God were actively promoted by several public intellectual figures and by the neoliberal class.
Even president Obama implied at one point that religious belief belonged to the more uneducated and poor masses. (Odd change in mentalities, since prior to that the prevailing view was that it belonged to the more educated.)
2.However, as Mark Blyth said, we're now facing an unprecedented turn in events on a global scale. "The era of neoliberalism is over. The era of neonationalism has just begun".
The electorate has decided against the current masterplan,
- and political parties that promoted neoliberalism/ globalization under the umbrella of unregulated capitalism
- are being gradually replaced by neonationalistic political parties.
Brexit, Greece, Trump's election, and possibly more elections to come (in Italy, Spain, France, Germany) demonstrate this.
And for a significant part of the neonationalistic parties, religion (as in Christianity in westetn countries) also plays a significant role.
3.So, as Mark Blyth said, are we entering an era of neonationalism and possibly resurgence of religious belief worldwide?
But since history often demonstrates that even movements that started under the right premises (to liberate people from totallitarian regimes) often end up emullating those whom they dethroned,
- how much of a risk is there that the R wing parties who are gaining power in America and Europe will end up imposing a totallitarian and fascist regime?
Similarly, will religious institutions embrace religion's spiritual and communitarian spirit, or wil. religion just be used as a tool for mass control and oppression by the govt.?
