I just spent a week up with Grammy Lynx and went to a bunch of appointments for her, I'll give details in a moment. I know it's a little selfish to start this thread, but of all the people I know personally she deserves it.
They did a biopsy on the tumor on her breastbone, they couldn't do a needle biopsy so they had to cut her open and do surgery to get the biopsy. I'm at home now but we got some of the results, not good news...
The tumor is malignant, however it is not bone cancer. They have done x-rays, a bone scan and a CT scan before the biopsy and are sending out the tumor piece so that they can do more tests on it. They did a couple of more blood tests today, they have to do what they call a PET scan. What the PET scan will do is the same thing as a bone scan but only on the soft tissue. They have no idea where the cancer is coming from, at which point they can not treat it until they know the origin. They can not do surgery to remove the tumor because it has grown too far into the breast bone and they would have to cut off the top of it and part of one of her collar bones and that's not something they can reconstruct.
So long and short of it is my mom has cancer, they don't know where it is coming from so they can't currently treat it properly. She has two tumors, one on her breast bone and the other on her pelvis. The whole family is pretty much scared as hell and though she's not on this forum it will still help her out knowing that people are pulling for her and hoping as much as I am that this can be treated and doesn't end up killing her like it did her mother.
