Stranger? It's a completely innocuous story. Seriously. There's nothing controversial about it. It's a fairly standard 'happily ever after' Romance.

Why would it engender that sort of reaction? I have no idea.

You totally have my sympathies. I get those comments and PMs constantly, followed by a major ratings drubbing of my stories. So many trolls out there with no lives and not enough hugs from mom.

I have my niece delete the public comments, just so other readers don't have to wade through them. One troll had a tantrum in a PM about his comments bring deleted and threatened to slit my throat if I did it again. He also kindly offered to bump me off with a sniper rifle, so that I didn't see it coming.

The same one got to one of mine in the AF contest. Very similar writing. . I got two of them. The site actually removed one, I didn't even ask. They certainly made my writing look good. Funy but it certainly is ridiculous. I'm not American and there fore don't get the prizes anyway, enen if I won.. it isn't so difficult to recalibrate the numbers if one wishes. I left the one comment so he/she could see it and know I wasn't intimidated by the bullying. If I ever find out who it is I'll have the evidence. I'd love to sue one of them. It would be a lot of fun just to add to their inadequacy. It wouldn't shock if it was fellow contestant but really, who cares. They can vote 1 as much as they like because it isn't so important and I like them, they convey the committment much more than a 5.

You are so right. Kethandra had a lot of votes removed from his competition story which kind of sank it from 4.9x at the start of the sweeps to 4.77 by the end so now we know why. So no, I doubt "it" influenced anything. Damn, have to put that one on the "to do" list for the next troll hunting story

I think, giving trolls like that twat any consideration, especially trying to figure out their motivation, is a waste of energy.

They'll do what they want to do, and the tools to prevent them doing it aren't in our hands.

As much as there's a measure of frustration, knowing one person's fans are always going to manipulate their scores to keep them at the top of the slush pile, there's also a freeing sense of 'Eh, then who gives a fuck'.

End of the day, I don't spend weeks of my life writing for anyone other myself, and I don't care about money. I fucking love writing, it makes me happy. Even if someone else reads it, I can't see their face, and I can't read their mind. The joy comes from living the story as I write it. Everything else, trolls that fuck my scores, or prizes out of reach, is all just... noise, after the ride's finished.

The finished story is like a photograph of a movie I got to live, that I'll probably only ever look at a couple of times, before moving onto the next one.

Quality has little do with trolls. Its about subject matter or if the author somehow competes with one of their favs on top lists or contests. Or....they're just having another crappy day.

In this case there is an agenda and that is to down vote anyone who says anything negative or has the nerve to say another story is better than their fav authors.

I doubt they even read the story. They were told sic em boy and they did.

Funny thing is that up-voting is just as easy as down-voting, whether on your own stories or anyone else's.

With a bit of effort I could probably write a script to do it automatically, but even manually it takes only about 5-10 seconds per vote.

I have no clue how it all works because I don't do any of it, but I thought you could only vote once from each IP, at least as anon, but some people said there's ways around that.

The up voting isn't as effective because it seems a one bomb does more damage than a five helps. I do think they're swept less than the bombs though. That can easily be seen in the way contest winning stories are now routinely in the 4.9's which with no offense meant to any authors is too much. The sweeps are having way too much impact on contests the last couple years and that's what the people with agendas count on now.
