A while back I took care of a rather demanding patient. He insisted tyhings be done his way, and was quite vocal about this.
The other Aides quickly refused to care for him, I just didnt care. What the hell he was sick and what he wanted done was easy enough to do, as long as it didn't interfere with his medical care.
By the time he left I was the only one who would enter his room willingly. While I was in there we talked about many different subjects and I learned quite a bit from him. He was discharged on one of my days off. (I heard the staff on duty that day had a little celebration when he left.)
This morning my boss handed me a small envelope while telling me this patients wife had brought it in for me. I thanked the Boss and went back to work. It was over an hour later before I got around to opening the envelope.
Inside was a nice letter on his personal stationary. (Heavy bond paper to boot.) In this letter he thankled me for the care I had given him under what he knew had been tough conditions. He also thanked me for talking with him when his family wasn't able to visit him. He made the comment that I had turned out to be the most intelligent of the staff and he admired my open mindedness and my willingness to discuss even those topics that are hot button issues with equinamity.
Also tucked into the envelope was a little gift. Five $100.00 bills.
I allowed the Boss to see and copy the letter, but not the gift.
I was pleasently surprised by this note of thanks.
