I walked onto my unit a touch early as is usual for me. We are supposed to be there at 0645 so we can get report from the overnight Aides and be ready to go at 0700. I was there at 0630.

I poured myself a cup of coffee and looked at the board. We had a full house of 36 patients. Then I looked at the duty book and saw one of the Aides had called off the night before. No replacement had been found. I did the duty assignments as fairly as I could, the other Aide and myself each had 18 patients. When I looked around for the night shift Aides to get a report I found they had already left. So no report for me, I was going into some of these patients rooms cold.

My boss shows up at 0645, she's going to be assisting one of the M.D.'s on his rounds. I get my things set up and I'm ready to work at a bit before 0700. I start doing the first run on my assignment. I'm doing the Vital Signs and passing out Ice Water.

At 0715 Mary shows up, looks at the assignments and immediatly starts bleating like a Sheep. There is no way she's going to take on 18 patients. She re-works the assignments so she has 10 and I have the rest. The boss sees her and gets on her case about showing up late. Then she looks at the new assignments and starts in about this. Mary starts screaming and ranting about racism. I hear the commotion and walk over, as soona s she sees me Mary goes off the deep end. She claims I did this to make her look bad. According to her I'm a racist and a sexist. Finally the boss gets tired of all of this and informs Mary she is fired.

Oh this truly sucks for the Cat. I suddenly find myself the only Aide on the floor. I'm running my ass off between answering call bells and doing the vital signs. I'm bathing patients and walking them. I'm moving them from their beds to their commodes and back. I'm feeding those who can't feed themselves, I'm doing wound and Catheter Care.

Breakfast and lunch are eaten between patients. I grab a bite as I rush past my linen cart. I need roller Blades. I'm checking Blood Sugar Levels and I'm dealing with emergencies. My last total care patient is bathed by 1300. The last bed is made by 1730. 36 patients and all are taken care of. My feet are burning and my back is wrecked. I have a headache and I haven't had a break all day.

At 1745 the boss shows up on the floor again, this time with the new C.E.O. of the hospital. (What they were doing there on a Sunday I have no idea.) The R.N.'s as well as the Charge Nurse all tell the boss and her boss what I have accomplished. My boss is not impressed but the new C.E.O. is. He calls me over and tells me to take a break. He also informs me that I am off tomorrow with pay. (This is not counted against my Paid Time Off.) When my boss wants to complain about this he looks her in the eye and asks her if she could have done the job I had done. After a bit she admits that she couldn't have.

I really didn't want the time off. It would mean my having to get up at 0500 and driving my wife in to work, then going back at 1830 to pick her up at 1900. When the Charge Nurse informed him of this he immediatly informed me that my wife also had the day off with pay.

So tomorrow my wife and I have an extra day off complete with being paid for it. For one of the few times I am being recognised for what I do. I'm loving it even though I know my boss and the others are going to try and make me pay for it.

Oh, I do hope you two do something really fun tomorrow and have a great day. You both deserve it.

A  from the good little witch.

If your boss has half a brain, she won't give you grief.

Enjoy your beer and your day off, Cat. You have seriously deserved it.

Hey, drink an extra one, you deserve it!

If you don't, I'll hoist one or more for you!

A rare instance when integrity wins out over incompetence. Good on you!
