Well, there go our forests!

The Prov. govt. of B.C is re-jigging the forestry industry to placate the U.S.

Meanwhile - a visiting Scottish Fisheries expert is warning that B.C. will lose much of it's bounty of wild-life. As it is the hunting of "big game" is wide open once more so we'll be seeing streams of Winnebagos (sp) with grizzlies and moose strapped to the back heading south. Alternatively, the Germans love our bears and mountain goats.

In the wild or strapped to the back of a Winnebago?;)

No idea...but he'll surely have one of those McDonald's meals and a B-52 Super-size mug that he's promoting. :)

Dude lives on the other coast, I think.

You get the Germans because they've killed almost all the wildlife in Europe. Now they have to roam around to kill more things.

WOW you sure have a lot of pent up hostility.

Mainly I want to discuss the comment you made about the timber industry and I know that I may offend some people but here I go any way.

1. The US mainly WA has a very high standard for forestry and timber harvest. We replant, thin and harvest wood, insead of the sterotypical clearcut mountainsides. Some areas are still clear cut, however,it is in small quantities, ie an acre here and there wich also serves as bedding areas to wildlife. The thinning helps to prevent forest fires that would completly destroy a forest ecology.

2. BC, and Canada for that matter are not held to the same standards of maintaining the forest. Some companies may meet the same levels but it is out of there own good will, and not inforced.

3. The Us timber industry especialy in WA is terrible. The US taxes the industry so much that it can not compeet with canadian wood. The Canadian wood however, can sell for much lower prices becasue the canadian gov't does not tax for stumpage. Also the government will give tax breaks for companies who do not make a profit selling the wood. Therefor, they are putting many logging companies inthe US out of business.

So, while you say, "The Prov. govt. of B.C is re-jigging the forestry industry to placate the U.S." I say ABOUT DAMN TIME.

OK maybe I have a bit of hostility on the subject too. :)

(that's it for my rant)

I can't speak for what the canadians are doing up north, but nearly every day I see the damage they've caused in my town. Lost jobs, mills closing. The US timber industry here in Northern Idaho has been very hard hit by the availability of cheap canadian lumber. If BC is bringing their industry more in line with ours, great.

Yipe...I was afraid no one would agree. Thank you!

I know of three mills, two logging out fits, and 7 lumber yards that have closed in my area the he last year. One my husband used to work for just started to lay off employees with 30 years seniority. We have the highest unemlpoyment rate inthe country. Not all due to logging, but it does account for a large number of claims.

lol
