Sitting here at the computer enjoying all the wonderfull pictures being posted by my cohorts in dealight and all of a sudden I hear the screaming of a tortured Banshee. We're talking this noise blasted through our house amking the windows rattle and my body hit the floor.

It took a couple of minutes to finally figure out where this hellacious noise was coming from. It seems tonight was the night the Power Plant nearby needed to vent steam. (Large amounts of steam, incredibly large noisy amounts of steam. Painfully loud steam.) When I looked over at the power plant I couldn't see the smoke stacks for the steam. After about ten minutes they must have released enough pressure to make someone happy because it stopped as fast as it started. I don't think it was an emergency of any kind as there aren't any alarms blaring as they normally do. (We'll put it this way, it scared me enough that what was hard from the pictures is now trying to hide.)

I used to work for a large power plane in Massachusetts. It's an automatic blowoff if the poiler is overpressured. If it went on for more than a few minutes it was probablly an emergency shutdown, meaning something really bad probablly almost did happened. Most pressure blowoffs are 10-20 seconds, any more and the boiler looses to much steam to run properly.

You aught to try it from less than 50 yards form the blowoff vent. You can't hear anything for 2 days.

CD,

I'm about twenty yards from the south gate of the plant, maybe two hundred yards from the plant itself. The noise from this was loud enough to rattle the windows and cause Tinittus. (A ringing in the ears.)

So what power plant in Mass.? (If you say Mirant on the Canal I'm going to hurt myself laughing.)

Better yell louder than that. I still have heraing loss. :p

Actually in all seriousness I still do. 160dB or so will do that.
Well, I think if your technique is up to par, I'll beat 160 dB.
