That's right. I finally broke down and ordered DSL.

It comes as a surprise to many who know me, and yet it shouldn't be.

I'm currently paying $25.00 a month for A.O.Hell Dialup. This is on top of my local and long distance phone service.

With this new plan I now have my local and the D.S.L. under one plan. (My long distance is on my cell phone.) With this plan in place I will end up saving almost $30.00 a month.

Well this will be nice, I'll even be able to download the occasional video without having to give up my computer for most of the night. And I'll be saving money. Cool.

Yeah, I switched to AT&T DSL a week ago. It's cheap and comes with lots of protection.

I had DSL for a while. It's terrific when it works. But I had a chronic problem with it being unavailable for several hours at a time. Like everyday between 5pm and 9pm. I spent hours on the phone with the techies, fixing the problem. Then it would appear again in a couple of days. It was always some glich in the phone company's system that disconnected me. And they never could get it fixed permanently.

I love my DSL (Verizon). It's way fast enough over dial-up and I rarely have any problems with down time. :)

I've loved my DSL since I switched.

Soon you'll wonder how you managed to live without it, Cat. :D

There is only one advantage of dial-up overDSL. When I'm online, people can't call my wife to gab and vice-versa.

we have dsl and when we go to my moms and have to use dialup I think I have gone to hell with how slow everything is and its hard to explain to her why it takes so long for her to download a video of the kiddie from us. I have tried to explain but she doesn't get the whole have patience thing. ;)

DSL rawks--you'll wonder how you got along without it. DSL Ultra is the best, about 256Kbs.

I recently upgraded to cable for about $4.00 a month more than DSL.

It's even faster. 12 Mbps with Power Boost.

Great for downloading large files--or games. :D

I have had cable at home for six years. I love it to death. But since we got cable in the office a while ago, I haven't been getting so much work done...

Do we call you Fast Cat now? He, he.

DSL Ultra is great for downloading the occasional HD porn movie (did I say that out loud) you can get Free Download Manager (just google) and put your downloads in there, if you set them to run one at a time on medium speed while you are surfing it hardly slows down. Then when you are leaving to go cook supper or whatever just click fast speed.

If you start to download more than a few things I really suggest you try the free download manager, even if you make no adjustments you get faster downloads, and it was nice for me to find something free that really works.

Buy yourself some of those phone filters at radio shack or somewheres, they burn out or just fail. They are cheap and when you hear a buzzing on the phone just throw the one in the trash and clip in a new one.

As allways, service is everthing. I have Earthlink now, they sux bigtime, and thier idea of tech support is to keep escalating the problem until you cancel. The thought of sending a repair person to troubleshoot never enters thier mind. I even printed up where they admitted I have asked for a repair person 26 times for an on-going problem with random disconnects, phone and DSL. While researching my account and admitting that the support person said he was appled, flappergrated, and confizzed that had happened. When I said so when is the repair person coming said he would escalate the problem, once again.

I didn't pay the bill and will soon be without phone or DSL, but also without random disconnects and useless tech support.

Maybe with my next phone and internet provider I can make a freakin phone call.

I thought this was gonna be about your motorcycle.

But yeah, night and day difference. You'll love it. And good luck trying to get other stuff done.

I hear ya, Cat.

I broke down almost a year ago...

...now I'm waiting for verizon to break down and offer it on my road.

Well I got the router and everything else today. (Man that was quick.) I can easily see a difference with it.

Only one problem the browser, (which seems to be a type of modified IE is very spotty about showing AV's and Smileys. I'll figure it out soon enough I'm sure.

Hey Cat, Avant Browser is a small free download, quick install, and then you can drag your toolbars around the way you want them. Its similar to IE but with a different core so not as vulnerable to attack and with lots more options.

What I did was leave IE alone and there waiting, I downloaded and installed Firefox Browser and Avant Browser. Then used each one occasionally for a few weeks to see which I liked best. When I decided I liked Avant best I made it my default browser, but still have IE and Firefox there to use if I want. The plus is being able to bring up unrelated articles in seperate windows on different browsers, and I even have two monitors on this computer now because I liked that so much.

What kind of DSL did you get?

:rose:

Go with Firefox for your browser, Cat. IE sucks monkey dick.

I'm with cloudy. Firefox works great.

ETA: Oh, and agree that IE sucks monkey dick.

I'm with you on cable, TE. By comparison DSL is like MacDonalds versus a real steak (with dial-up in the 'bread-and-water' category). In my experience, once you get over the megabit speed, the limit is mostly at the other end - can they serve fast enough to keep you happy as well as the rest of the world?

Yep. Firefox every time.
I'm assuming DSL is cable? There isn't much of that where I am, we use Broadband and a wireless router. Way quicker over dial up, and doesn't interfere with the phone.

Well, I'm quite certain you are both wrong.

IE sucks donkey dick and don't you forget it.

Gosh, this thread is SO sexy. Shall I tell you about changing from Virgin Home to ntl: business (and it hasn't even actually happened yet!)

Dang, man, save it for Penthouse Forum!

Friend of mine (techie type) put Firefox on my machine a couple of months ago and ordered me to "at least try it".
Haven't opened IE since.

Nope, DSL is "Dedicated Subscriber Line" and probably what you refer to as "Broadband." Cable is fiber-optic or shielded Coaxial cable for digital video service and/or internet access.
