Weird score collapse

I guess this is likely to be caused by a few trolls throwing 1's at my stuff (god knows why), but does anyone know of any other reason why a story of mine (A week in Miami) which has been up above 4.8 since publication over 8 months ago would suddenly dive to 4.6ish overnight?

I shouldn't care... but I do!

Well seeing it is that old either you ticked someone off on a thread and they bombed you but more likely than not it was due to a sweep.
The Earth day contest is running so Lit does a lot of sweeps to get rid of suspicious votes usually one bombs but sometimes if they think some 5's were "funny" they will take them away as well.

When was the last time you checked it? If Laurel has posted the monthly winners for the month in which the story was published since then, it may very well be that contest sweeps have made an impact. A high score such as yours is a likely target, as it seems to me that stories on the higher end of the scale get swept a little more deeply during monthly contest sweeps.

It could be other factors. Have you posted new stuff recently? Perhaps in a different genre? Did the story in question have low vote totals? Have you been writing a seriel/series and posted a one-shot story in the middle because it came to you and demanded writing? ( Some fans are a bit obsessive and may down vote one-shot stories to discourage them until you finish the multi-chapter story )

There's all kinds of things that can cause score dives, not necessarily related to malicious voting ( though that's certainly a possibility )

Note that a dip from 4.8 to 4.6 isn't really a "collapse." One 1 vote brings down seven 5 votes to less than hot (4.5).

Hmmm

Thanks for the replies. Not sure quite what it is. The story has 229 votes, so a single 1 would be unlikely to bring the score down by much. However, it's crept up a little again so I'll leave well alone.

I was just a little puzzled because this is one of my highest rates stories and I had no idea what was going on. I'll just hope it doesn't start happening anywhere else as well.

Unfortunately I have a couple of fans who message me to say "Read your story again last night and gave it another 5". Now I know those are going to get swept.

This is not completely true. If a story or poem has received seven votes, all of "5" it would not rate a H because that's not enough votes. If somebody then dropped a one-bomb, the average would be 4.50.
5 * 7 = 35. 35+1 = 36. 36/8 = 4.500000. It would still not have a H because of too few votes, but the average score would be high enough.

Actually, they probably wouldn't be counted at all, unless that fan used a different computer with a different ISP.

*Nevermind*

It's like talking to a blank wall.

Box, I really, really think they meant seven votes from different people in the example given.

Why say you that? I'm just disagreeing with your math. The result is NOT less than 4.50.

box's math is correct but ace made a valid point about the effect of low votes...

You don’t say if your 229 votes were before or after the large drop? Or the time frame during which this drop occurred – do you check daily or did you notice it a month after your last check? Without this data an exact answer to your question is impossible. However here are two possible scenarios (the most extreme possibilities) :

One, a bunch of low votes brought your average down. As follows:

For example if you had 222 votes and an average of 4.81 to start it would take just 7 “1” votes to bring your average down to 4.69.

The second scenario is that A SWEEP of 5 votes caused the fall (as suggested by someone above). This would require a much more extreme (and less likely) scenario.

For example if you’d started with 389 votes and an average of 4.81 some 160 “5” votes would have to have been swept away to bring your average down to 4.69.

I’d assume you’d have noticed if you’d lost more than a third of your votes!

So, unless you orchestrated a massive vote fraud (which is possible given your past history in contests here) I’d guess that someone voted down your story. If the story was very highly rated on the all time list of whatever category the story is in I’d guess it was someone who wanted totake your place.

Or it could have been your ex-wife.

Or it could have been little ralphie and/or darkboy. They’re both notorious breakers of the rules.
