So I had a new story come to mind a couple days ago. It played out in my head for a day, I liked it, and started fleshing it out and taking notes before I forgot. I roughed out an outline. Check. But, some of the details were so awesome and intriguing and vivid, I didnt want to lose them. (That happens every time I go to sleep LOL) So I started drawing out the buildings and scenery and floor plans on a white board just as Id visualized them. The buildings and layout are relevant to the story btw- without giving anything away, picture a story set in a kind of corporate summer camp- for gurls of sissy aspirations.
Anyway, does anyone else have to take notes and make doodles as they turn daydreams into stories?? I just felt really funny and laughed at myself a moment ago when I realized what Id been doing for the last 30 min...

Yeah, kind of. I need to know the layout of a building before I start writing characters into the building. Stormwatch is a tough series because there are several different houses and businesses, when I get tired of dealing with that I send them all camping, cabins are easy to figure out. I even find myself worrying about the layout of the dairy barn in my We're a Wonderful Wife series. With AI Era: Agent AI I have a secret underground headquarters for my spys, and since that is an old Colorado gold mine I can let that be anything I want.

I love underground secret HQs!!!šŸ˜
I have a thing for old abandoned buildings...ones that at least appear that way on the outside, but may be quite active inside. Maybe even with sinister plots!!

*insert feminine DrEvil laugh here

For sure take notes. Usually if something comes to me I write a mini synopsis in a notes file. Or just the other day I dreamed about something and it had enough inspiration I sat down and wrote the whole story because I just had it in my head and was motivated.

Though rarely does that ever line up with when I have time.

Yes. I drew a floorplan for the sex chamber/playroom that is becoming central to my story series. Premier will be in the next installment.

Since I dabbled in commercial graphic arts off and on, I've created a handful of logos for the businesses in the story to assist my mental imagery. Here's the main one:

Here's a rough draft of a logo for their coffee kiosk business featuring baristas in short skirts:

I literally just finished a story (awaiting publication) where I needed to do a very rough sketch of an apartment building layout, mainly so I could get a better idea of what someone may or may not be able to see through his neighbor's balcony doors.

I've got the layout for a house turned brothel sitting on my desk right now. LOL Had to be able to keep track of what hallways people would be coming from, and where the doors, windows, and furniture were ( or at least started out ) for one scene. Then the general environs as well, because the barn turned stable and workshop are frequent locations and I needed the reference for their relationship to each other.

Really rough stuff, but helpful.

Amongst my various experiments as an undergraduate was dabbling in both civil engineering and architecture. I took what my high school called ā€˜mechanical drawing,ā€™ and discovered that while I was absolute crap at free hand drawing, give me a straightedge and a 1/50 ruler and I was there. I donā€™t generally resort to drawing out my houses and buildings, I just keep them in mind.

Civil engineering for design at a larger scale, so layout of towns, cities, neigho(u)rhoods and uh, sewers and utilities. And spaceships.

Calculus and physics was prerequisites for those as well as computer science, so it was all just being willing to attend (and pay for) an extra undergrad year :giggle:. Since it was me working and paying my way through, all fair.

I did this once for my erotic horror series. The MC lives on the top floor of an old five story hotel. The first three levels have been converted to a strip club and two others devoted to fetish/goth etc
The fourth floor remains intact and guests rent the rooms if they find someone they want to spend the night with

Basement is now a temple and where the MC attends to "business" when there are enemies to be dealt with.

Then you'll love this story then, they even have a secret underground aircraft hanger that they fly a fleet of helicopters from

Story 1
Story 2

In my one series, the male character's apartment is based on one I lived in for several years, so the layout is quite familiar, while the female character's dorm apartment is based on an actual college dorm I worked in on a regular basis.

Most times it's not all that important, but it is helpful when you have characters actually moving around a place to know where everything is, especially room layouts etc, so that the details you describe actually make sense and you don't accidentally contradict your own writing.

I feel confused as to what's being classified as "weird" here so I'm a "no" b/c nothing jumps out and I'm all for people feeding their muses what they need. Muses are a dying breed. Depression and negativity are contagious. And I'm sure they all talk, mine especially (chatterbox for sure)

I am mindful of house configurations even when they'll be no mention of it whatsoever. It's about maintaining my own sense of plausibility and adding more fuel for creativity gremlins inhabiting my mind to surprise me.

Lines of sight, privacy and hearing range, odd ball features/expenditures to extend character (modern, $$$ professional vent fan in a dated, 70s kitchen *not a cook, she is very sensitive to smells*) building out a bit of a floor plan can pay odd, unique dividends which motivates and I adore.

... I drew a floorplan for the sex chamber/playroom that is becoming central to my story series. ...

I just recalled that after putting the plan down on paper, I had to go back and edit several plot points in the realization there was not enough room to do everything I wanted the characters to have in the space.

So, in essence, sketching things out like this is not "weird", it's just another tool to assist the writing process.

Sometimes. I download floor plans of houses and images of rooms. I've drawn a map on one occasion, thought about including it in a book, and decided against it - but I used the map in keeping the locale straight.

I draw layouts of rooms, a layout of a ship or resort, or the landscape if it is necessary to the story. I make notes of what people look like, but don't necessary use those in the story as I like people to put the person or persons they want to in the parts. I write about breast in generic sense, large, medium, small, thin waist, thick, whatever. That reminds me, I have stories that need attention.

The primary reason I do building layouts for stories--at least in my head--is for continuity, making sure that when characters use the space, their movement and placement is plausible.

That makes total sense. Which is unsual in this senseless world we live in. ;) Sorry, my smart assedness is showing, I should wear longer skirts I guess.
