Political gesture, or long overdue?

WASHINGTON - President Bush designated Wednesday as a day of national recognition for former U.S. prisoners of war and pledged to work for the safe return of Americans captured in the Iraq war.

"These brave men and women in uniform follow in the footsteps of these former POWs who placed country above self to advance peace in a troubled world," Bush said in the proclamation he issued Tuesday.

Seven U.S. soldiers are POWs in Iraq, and U.S. officials are trying to determine their location. The Pentagon says it is holding more than 7,000 Iraqi POWs.

Bush's proclamation declares April 9 to be "National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day."

"As we honor our former POWs, we are reminded of our current POWs, captured in Operation Iraqi Freedom," the declaration said. "We will work to secure their freedom, and we pray for their speedy and safe return."

It was reported to night that 5 blood stained US military uniforms were found by troops in an abandoned jail.

They're thought to belong to the 5 soldiers captured and displayed by Iraqi TV at the start of the attack on Iraq.

Their whereabouts is unknown.

Marines stormed a prison SE of Baghdad..

There they found American Army uniforms with the nametags torn off. Personal effects indicate the uniforms belonged to the captured troops, no wonder the Iraqis won't let the IRC visit them.

for everyday they remain pows..an Iraqi officer should be executed....see how long they keep them...

If statements like that were repeated more often by more people it would certainly show the collapse of 'civilised' America...

Luckily I've no doubt you're very much in the minority so...

It's time to go back to the loony bin...

Life is cheap there. I don't think it would cause them to act differently.

I sincerely doubt that would help. Since they already execute their own. And killing Iraqi PoW's is not the answer. Unfortunatly all we can really do is hope and pray for their return, alive.

A situation I was in...

Found me saying to myself, "I hope they find me and at least bring me home to be buried there."

As long as we can bring them and Capt. Speicher home, that will be enough. :rose:

Perhaps execute an American officer for everyday a POW is illegally held at Guantanamo Bay?

sufisaint that is not the way

If they have been excuted then they will feel the wrath of the US in a court there they can be judged by a court of law

not out of vengenge

Both, I'd say, but the long overdue need for it outweighs the politicization of the timing.

God bless the POWs and keep them safe. :rose:

Apples and oranges, in my opinion. Well, they are not being tortured and are being treated properly under worldwide scrutiny.... They already killed 2,000 civilians...i think were are more than even...

You cannot be merciful to those who show no mercy...thats just weakness and cowardice disquised as virtue....the mercy may be in the quick death you giveyour enemies..torture for own sake is nothing but evil...
