13 Hallow Road….the street name itself gave the creeps when the couple heard it the first time. They imagined the house to be a run down and old, but they were in for a surprise when the husband saw the renovated and improved Victorian style house. He fell in love with it the moment they saw the interior; the fenced porch, two stories, multiple rooms, spacious rooms and ladies’ favorite... marble floor bathrooms with a stand-alone bath tub. The house had an old theme to it an even though it was old, built in late 1800s, over the years, it’s been renovated at least a few times. The big front yard and even bigger backyard where the new owners had installed a swimming pool before moving in.

It wasn’t hard for anyone to convince after seeing it the first time and few days later, Jack showed the pictures he took when visiting the house alone the first time, convincing the ladies, he made the call and wired their loan money as down payment, signing the contract electronically. The deal had been closed so quick that the realtor was glad and put up another 5% off on the price since she wanted to get rid of the house. It was just perfect. The husband, Jack, in his early 30s and Brooke, in her late 20s, met in college. Since then, they’ve dated and have been together before getting engaged two years back. About a year ago, they got married and owned a nice little condo in Arizona. Things got harder when the husband's job shifted to Sacramento. Upon doing a little house hunting near his job, the places they saw were smaller in size and higher in price. This had pushed them to look for houses on the outskirts of the city, far enough to find a good house and near enough to commute.

They also wanted a bigger place since they always had frequent visitors; either her side of family or his and if no one was visiting, then one of their friends is always over. The couple liked to keep it social and always welcomed people's company. The deciding point for the couple was when Brooke’s younger sister, Terra, had decided to get an apartment in Arizona because she was paying too much for dorming and wanted to save money. When Brooke found out, she insisted that Terra live with them because of a spare room they had in their apartment condo. Now moving to California, Terra had no problem changing campuses and tag along with her sister and her husband.

Their options were to rent an apartment condo like before or get a house of their own. Now that they were married and all, they wanted to have a place of their own to call it a home. This buy fit their budget as well as their necessity as it was spacious. The day was finally here, they already had their boxes packed, and in transit, to be arriving next day to their new house. They came in their two cars, with only bags of clothes for now. The couple and the sister stood outside, talking to the realtor as she came by to give them the keys to their new mansion and told them she had to leave since she had another appointment.

“Here we go!” Brooke exclaimed as she turned the knob and pushed the door open, entering into the house that was patiently waiting for its new owners. Brooke had a white top, small vest and a blue pair of denim shorts, an open toe short heels completing her outfit. She placed her bag along with her purse after entering the place. Terra had a colorful top and blue jeans shorts. She spoke as she entered, “I am tired already…I don’t think I have it in me to do any more work today. It’s evening already you guys. All we have to do is unpack which I am sure isn’t going to get done in one day. How about we order in some pizza and just call it a night.” Brooke stood there looking at her sister and her husband. “I think that’s a great idea!” Brooke agreed and looked at Jack, “Babe you mind ordering us a pie?”

The search for a place had gone actually with much less hassles than Jack had thought. Of course there were a few nice condos which begged for a good look, but since he had time and a condo was not exactly what they wanted, Jack kept on searching. After explaining to the realtor exactly what they wanted and needed, the houses came into play. The first three were quite ordinary and the distance from the city just made them a bit unattractive and of course the price didn't sit right with him.

But then the realtor drove to Hollow street. The street name didn't bother him too much, but when they stopped in front of number 13, Jack started to feel just a little bit uneasy. This uneasiness passed quite quickly when he first laid eyes on the house.

It was gorgeous. Not in the sense that it looked cute, it had the looks and the atmosphere of a house which had seen a lot, but still had character and a certain freshness to it. A tour only cemented the feeling, the distance was just perfect, the size, the interior, the yard... all of it was just what Jack would have wanted in a place of his own and he was quite certain that it would not take much to convince Blake. The house was perfect and what was even better, was when the realtor told him the price.

They just had to have it. He went back home and of course the pictures and description was all it was needed to convince both Blake and Terra. The rest is what you would call history. The more pleasant surprise was that the realtor gave them a further 5% drop in the price, that went down quite nicely with the finances they had and Jack didn't question this bargain.

The drive out to the new house was not too arduous, he could feel his own excitement building as they came within sight of the house. He wasn't sure if the two ladies felt the same, but he was glad to be back and to have a house that could be made a home. He unpacked the necessities first and had just entered the living room, when Blake agreed with Terra (naturally) to call it a day and ordering pizza. Jack placed down the sleeping bags and he gave his wife a slight smile.

"Sure, deep dish it is, just don't expect the best of pizzas from a small town."

He pulled out his phone and called inquiries as he headed outside to the car, on his return with the camping mattresses he had the pizza shop on the line.

"So what pizza would the ladies want?" He asked as he dropped the mattresses with the sleeping bags

Blake smiled and kissed him back before he went into the kitchen. She turned to her little sister and smiled, “Well if you don’t want to then we don’t have to. I am also done for the day. Just want to sit and relax, not do anything…AT ALL!” She shouted playfully at her as she picked up the box that had her night clothes in it. She figured she can change into something later on since tonight’s the first night they will be sleeping in this huge house that had four bedrooms. Sure, the rooms will be occupied over time, occasionally by their friends or relatives coming over.

Terra was looking around and liked what she saw. She walked over to the fireplace, “I like how it’s built. Definitely love what the previous owners have done to the place by upgrading the fireplace. I heard there’s also a pool in the backyard!” she flicked the switch and the fireplace came to life. “How about we just sit in front of the fireplace, ea and relax over here, before heading out to our rooms!” Terra looked over at Blake, who was walking towards the fireplace to check it, “Cool…” She said flicking the switch off, “We can do that. Definitely. We have the whole weekend to unpack so I don’t see what’s the hurry? Wanna go explore the house? We still have a good few minutes before the pizza gets here.” She said with a wicked grin as they went on exploring the first floor together.

With all the boxes laying near the foyer and a few in the living room area, they went to the dining room, then through the passage way into the kitchen which had marble countertops and a center island. On the far side of the first floor, there was also a study room. Jack loved this because he sometimes spends lot of time staying up at night and he can make use of a separate private space to himself. Seeing Jack there near the kitchen, making a call, Blake rubbed his back as they passed by him, “Look! It’s got a mini bar! I know where I will be going if I need a drink!” She said and smiled at Taylor, “Right behind you sis!” Blake nodded no at her younger sister, “Hey…you’re still under 21. That means you can’t!”

Making their way, they turned into the foyer and then up the stairs to the second floor with 4 bedrooms. First thing they saw was the foyer, since it’s two stories. The first door on right was the master bedroom, which they visited first and as obvious, it was the one where Blake and Jack will be living. “This is fucking humongous you guys. You mind if I share the bed with ya’all!” Terra giggled jokingly as they exited and went onto the next bedroom. “I will take this one,” Terra said when they checked the rest of the bedroom and pointed to the third bedroom they’d checked, just because of the view it offered and privacy since the master bedroom was across the hall. Once they were done exploring, the girls split up, wanting to freshen up in the bathroom, Blake went to her master bedroom and Terra went to the room she’d picked. “I will see you downstairs. Just going to freshen up…” Terra said and then Brooke mentioned the same.

Jack finished ordering the pizza and after making sure about the price, he hung up. While the two women were busy exploring the upstairs rooms, he first went to the study, he paused in the doorway and looked around, this room needed some renovation, but he smiled as he envisioned how the study would look like when he was done with it. It might take a bit of time to fix up though, but Jack liked to work with his hands.

Turning from the room, he felt a slight shiver run down his spine, he rolled his neck and looked around him, but there were no indication of a vent or opening from which that chilly draught came from. He shrugged since he could not feel nor see anything and turned to walk away from the study. He unlocked the back door and stepped out into the backyard. Already his mind started working on how to change the back. Of course a tool shed, a pergola over the patio, an enclosure for the pool. Perhaps extend the patio slightly for those days that the girls would want to tan a bit and of course the hedge needed some work.

He looked around and nodded, it was a place they could make a home and a place children could grow up. Especially in this kind of neighborhood. He smiled and shook his head, that was a thought for another time. He turned his back on the back yard and entered the house again, closing and locking the door behind him.
