Emma won the US Open, making history in a hard-fought match between a Canadian teenager, and a British teenager born in Canada.

Modern times. A Hungarian/British Chinese teenager with unearthly calm beat an intensely hungry Ecuadorian/Canadian Filipino teenager, both of them overcoming hulking, chiseled, experienced 6 foot brutes along the way. Emma is fantastic and has machine-like form, but you have to love Leylah's poise, personality and sheer desire. After knocking off so many top tier opponents, it looks like she got tired and her serve let her down. This isn't over!

British, Canadian, aren't they really from the same country? I mean, isn't Canada still a Dominion of England? Even no longer formally, emotionally? Well, all except that one province that speaks that horrible version of French.

;););););)

It was a great match.

The first ever qualifier to win a Grant Slam, ever. I didn't believe that when I heard it, but it's true - a couple wild cards have, but never a qualifier.

It's already been observed that she's a Londoner when she's winning, and from Kent when she's losing (she's from Bromley which is technically a borough of London but really isn't London).

Probably helped not having to worry about her A-levels, too (she sat them in the weeks running up to Wimbledon, but did very well, apparently)
I felt for the other lass, clearly holding it together to fight back until the interruption and then losing it. I hope the media.dont spin her as a 'diva' or worse for the rest of her career. The repeated loop of footage while the stage for the award ceremony was built seemed designed to make her look bad.

Also wtf was the stage needed for, was it designed by IKEA, and my god those speeches by the McNulty guy and then the banker were excruciating.

I know fuck all about Tennis, but it was an exciting match, and I am always amazed at the power they have, not too mention the insane cardio needed to be able to keep moving like that.

I've played for fun, and I'm a lifelong runner and gym rat and the woman I played with has been playing for years and she got me to the point I was ready to fall over, just kept running me back and forth until I had to stop.

Other issue is it took me some time to stop treating it like I'm swinging a bat and sending the ball out of the court and down the damn block.

Canada is an independent country that still has Her Majesty as its Head of State (which role is totally separate from being Head of State of the UK).

Emma is British, with a Romanian father and a Chinese mother. She was born in Canada but moved to the UK when she was two. She, and her parents, are now British, but she speaks Chinese and in China was (not now!) seen as a competent table tennis player.

LOL, you'll have us living in Igloos next.

Canada (as Ogg pointed out) is an independent country but we are all former colonies of England. We all belong to the Commonwealth of Nations.

As well as the Commonwealth you can add the British overseas territories including Gibraltar, The Falkland Islands, The Channel Islands etc...

Don't forget Northern Ireland, which is part of the Commonwealth. But apparently the Republic of Ireland is not. In fact, they probably are proud not be part of the Commonwealth. :)

Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland).

As for the Republic of Ireland, it's a beautiful and proudly independent place (as you noted) with very friendly people but many of the county roads are scary as hell with stone fence walls set about 10 centimeters/4-inches off the edge of pavement! We had to stop and back up a couple of times because there wasn't room to pass oncoming trucks. :)

We toured Ireland about 10 years ago and it was a pleasure, apart from some of the narrow roads, to tour such a pleasant country, meeting really nice people, and with a population of less than 5 million plenty of space. I think, if I remember correctly, the only dual carriageway we came across was going in and out of Dublin.

Terrific tennis match

Two teenagers, with only two months between them, gave us a classic tennis match. The score, in two sets, does not show just how close and how tense a match it was.

I can understand Leylah being upset but no more than Emma must have felt having to pull out of Wimbledon. Emma didn’t pick up the injury deliberately and you could see the blood running down her leg. If Leylah had received the injury would she have carried on playing or would she have called for a medical time out?

These things happen and you have to accept it or give up and go and do something else. Otherwise you’ll end up the rest of your life whining like Mary Decker.

What I thought I saw on the injury timeout--and what I heard in the commentary coverage was that Raducanu didn't ask for the medical timeout; the chair umpire called it. And, yes, if Fernandez had a leg bleeding like that I would expect her to get one immediately too. The time taken was less than the five minutes allowed.

The Channel Islands are Crown Dependencies, as is the Isle of Man. They are not part of the UK nor territories of it, though they do use the pound sterling (good luck finding any shop to take it - I've seen a Guernsey pound once in my life). Totally separate legal systems. Fun fact: the Manx Parliament, the Tynwald, is the oldest in the world.

Northern Ireland is also stunning, with fabulous coastline and still incredibly few tourists.

Yes, the commentators said that it was the chair umpire's decision to break to patch up Raducanu, and that this was being pointed out to Fernandez.

So, table tennis.

In the states it used to be called ping pong. I played growing up. We had a ping pong table in the basement. It eventually got moved to the garage where we could only play in the spring, summer, fall.

Raducanu is a smart young woman. Both her parents were former academics and she just got A stars in Pure and Applied Mathematics and an A in Economics. That would put her in the top 5% of University applicants. I would not be surprised if she studied and played only part time for a year or two.

I also noted another smart move, she posted a spoken message in Mandarin on one of her social media sites, mentioned her idol Li Yang, and her granny in ShenYang. She got 200 million hits - that's media management!

Fernandez excellent too - service just a tad wobbly let her down but she will win GS.

All class ladies, and easily the best final of 2021.

I'm ready for mass honorable retirements of the old guard in both men's and women's tennis and moving on to a newer generation.

Certain area's in the Colorado Rocky Mountains are like. Not the stone walls, but the sides of the mountain, and the drop off to oblivion, are less than a foot either side on some of the jeep trails. Went fishing with pop's back in 2008 or 09, we did the The Cache la Poudre river, and back up in the surrounding mountains. OH, my God, I was one scared girl part of time.

We fished one creek, we had ropes tied between dad, my brother, and me, in order to get around to the "good" parts. I feel at one point, and bro had to keep me from hitting the creek, way the hell below. I scaled back up to them, them pulling me as I climbed. FUN! I mean it, your not living at the edge if you don't have a little danger at times.

I pissed myself, just a little, 😁 Lucky for me, I had a change in my backpack.

She also did an interview in Mandarin for Chinese TV. That will help her global audience.
