Does anyone out there know anything about wax and wax play? I would like to find a kind of wax that cools quickly/has a lower melting temp. Any other sugestions on technique would be appreciated.

Beeswax is a huge no-no in wax play as it burns at a significantly higher temperature than most other waxes, so steer clear of beeswax.

Paraffin is the best temperature wise. Coloured candles burn hotter than white or pink...reds and blacks especially.

One of the best things for wax play IMO is a parraffin bath. You can find them in the beauty and health isles of most dept stores. They are basically pots that melt wax for dipping hands and feet in for arthritis and softening skin, etc. The temperature is adjustable, which is nice for beginners. You can use a paintbrush, a spoon or ladle, etc, to drop the wax or paint it on to skin. The only problem with paraffin baths is you have to warm them up in advance as it can take many hours for the wax to melt so you have to plan ahead, but it is portable, unlike trying to melt wax in a pot or something. One plus to paraffin baths is you can get blocks of paraffin wax that have menthol in them as well. I LOVEEEEEEE menthol wax, it adds this chill sensation that combined with the heat of the wax is just fucking awesome.

Candles are obviously an ideal choice...most people use tapers, but they tend to melt faster than most candles so be careful of that. Be careful also of tealights and other smaller candles...the bottoms can burn/fall out and cause serious burns, so once the candle gets down to a stub, throw it out rather than burn it to the bottom. Tapers also tend to drip extremely fast as the wax pools so fast. My Domme prefers jar candles as you can just put the top on and toss them back in the bag when you are done, and they are easy to hold and safe to set aside when moving on to something else for awhile.

The closer you hold the candle or wax to the skin, the hotter it will be when it meets skin. Start out holding it higher up to allow the wax to cool a bit before it hits its target, and get closer as you have a better idea of your partners' tolerance. Everyone is different in how they will react and what they can tolerate.

Umm...trying to think of what else...oh, yes, put down a sheet before you start. Wax is MESSY. Be careful of body hair...wax in body hair obviously is tough to remove, so unless you plan to make that pain play a part of the scene, take that into consideration when you choose your target areas.

Wax can backsplash...be careful to stay away from the face to avoid any wax splashing into eyes.

I love wax combined with knife play...having her peel the wax off my skin. Yum, fucking yum.

You probably knew most of that already but what the heck, maybe someone else doesn't. Have fun :)

Serijules said it correctly. I would say votire candles work nicely if you have some thing to hold them in, like a base that holds 3 at one time. This way you have 3 separate streams of wax hitting you. I did hear that you should not play with wax and the armpits.

Serijules ever combine needles and wax?? If your a bit of a bleeder the blood follows the contours of the wax, I heard its suppose to make body art.

Navarre once gave me the url of some super colorful fun wax retailer. You could click his nick and PM him to ask. I don't have it bookmarked still sorry.

Wax play can be incredibly fun. I love being "waxed". :)

The best site for information that I've found is this one. You really want to make sure that you understand the burning temperature of the candles you're using. Votives can burn extremely hot, especially if they are scented and colored. Tapers also burn pretty hot. Straight parafin wax without scents and colors burns less hot. If you've ever seen the religious candles in the grocery store, they can work really well. They are the candles that are in the tall glass jars, usually with pictures of Mary on them. A domme friend of mine fills her crock pot with water and turns it on, then stands the glass candle jars in it and lights them, so that they melt from the top and bottom. When she is ready to use them, she pokes holes through the wax that remains. Works really well. Don't ever use candles that have items inside them, especially glitter or other metal objects.

Couple of other thoughts. Buy a couple of cheap shower curtains at the dollar store and use them under the subject. Makes clean up really easy. don't get wax on clothing or in hair if you can help it. Using a dull knife to remove the wax can be interesting, just make sure it truly is dull. It may feel like the knife is actually cutting the skin, which is an interesting sensation.

This thread has a few interesting things on it as well. Enjoy.

Whatever you do, DON'T use birthday candles!! *Shudders at the memory!*

I enjoy hot wax using exactly this method - including for some self play.

These two links show some of my hot wax self play...

chocolate

I've been wondering if there is a kind of dipping chocolate that cools quickly that may be a fun substitue for wax. I haven't tried it but it might be fun to have all that chocolate nibbled off after it cooled. Does chocolate melt at a lower temperature than wax? Has anyone else tried anything like this?

If your looking for candles, Ikea, Wally, or a dollar store will be a good place to find them and they are cheap too. This of course can make it a bit more attractive as a type of play.

I tried chocolate on my ex husband. He was not keen, too messy, too weird etc etc etc lol

But it had been a long held fantasy of mine. As I had not known my ex long it seemed a good way to start a relationship.

(As an aside, he moved in with me four days after we met and he stayed 10 yrs  )

I melted the chocolate and checked the temp, it seemed ok. I decided to pour it on from a small teaspoon.

A BIG mistake, the choc was a bit too hot for his delicate areas, so he jumped, that made me panic and I put the metal spoon down on his stomach; he really yelled as the metal was hot enough to burn him slightly.

He calmed down, but the shock made him sweat slightly and the choc had started to cool.
Licking harding choc off a softening, sweaty cock was. quite frankly hard work, and a waste of good chocolate.

Seems hard to believe that it was thirteen years ago, but it still makes me grin.

Of course, its unlikely that Andante will trust me to try the same thing on him now.

Perhaps some things are a better fantasy than a reality lol

I prefer to buy homemade candles from candlemakers, kink or otherwise, as you know exactly what is in them usually. Most craft candlers are very good about labeling their product....I never can find what is in the candles when I look at them at the stores. Some cheaper candles use a mix of beeswax and paraffin or have hidden metallics in them. I bought one taper one time that I didn't realize had a pearl coating on it and whatever was in there burned me badly (I wasn't using it for wax play but for a table centerpiece and the wax dripped on my hand when I moved it).

For safety sake that is a good plan, but here in the Phoenix area not sure where I might find a candle maker. I can look around for myself but it seems if you live in NE side of the US this might be a bit more prolific.

There is a chocolate body paint of sorts made in The Netherlands..I actualy bought it in Oz before I ever came here!! It comes in a huge glass jar with a nice thick soft brush to paint it on with and then you just have to lick it off slowly. :D

Craft shows or those little personal shops where people sell crafty things and whatnot are a great place to find them. Ebay has a lot of candlemakers that have stores with fairly good prices, cept you have to pay shipping, which sucks. Craft supply stores are good too, as they usually carry types of candles that are labeled since people use certain types for certain craft things. i've had more luck finding labeled candles in craft supply stores than anywhere else, especially unscented ones, which are better. The wedding supply isle is a good place to start.

Hmm, thats a good idea actually, buy a jar of hot fudge for ice cream topping and warm it up in the microwave, then set it in a container of hot water to keep it warm....would work MUCH better than melted chocolate because it's nearly impossible to keep chocolate from hardening unless it is kept at a boil, and the temperature would be so unsure.

I like this idea. Nifty.

Some people are very sensitive to the hot prick of wax. For those people, or for people who have never tried waxing before, place some aluminum foil tight to the skin. It cools the wax very quickly, has the obvious advantage of quick cleanup, and it is reassuring to the newbie that he or she won't be hurt.
