They used WW2 and earlier stuff (although the RPGs did help) to stymie first the USSR and then us. Of course, they fucked about the Brits in the 19th century, too. Basically, they seem not to get along until they can pull it together when the outsiders/invaders show up. Then they go underground and fight a war of attrition ambush-style. The results are self-evident. Abu is still there, Charlie is still there, and the Soviet partisans who took it to the Germans in WW2 are still there, or their descendants. The Indians didn't do all that badly in 18th century US in the war before the Revolution.
