I think that's what people are trying to stave off. Most likely, as Plato says, democracy will shuttle back and forth with oligarchy for awhile before turning to full tyranny, but that means rule by billionaires.

It’s funny what passes for “Tyranny” in some minds.

“Cruel” and “oppressive” are being used to describe an elected government with a constitutional mandate to “promote the general welfare.”

People are feeling oppressed by the promotion of electrification of transportation, ascribing fears of totalitarian control rather than managing existential threats, just a many see banning tobacco smoke in public places as an affront to freedom.
