Has anyone read the graphic novel "Watchmen," by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons? I've been reminded of it all day. I could hardly wrap my mind about it when it was just a story in a comic book; and it's even harder to believe when it's real. But the country's response, the empathy and the human compassion . . . ARE we being "frighten[ed] . . . towards salvation with history's greatest practical joke"? Are we finally allowing disaster, horror, and terror to bring us together when we couldn't do it ourselves? Or will we simply jump to retaliation?

Does Ozymandias (the character) have the right idea: that this could be the only solution for a downward-spiraling humanity?

I'm frightened. And I don't trust the world to learn from this before we cause more damage.
