Before we go on, let me say something nice about introversion and being alone. I am an introvert. I often love being alone. As the father of a rambunctious infant, I know all too well how sacred and essential a moment of quiet can be. But there is a difference between a moment’s quiet and a decade-over-decade plunge in socialization. From the 1960s to the 1990s, Americans became less likely to hang out, join clubs, and invite friends over for dinner. Then came the real crash. This one is a big deal. It, the Shitfire, and the ME-109 all had V-12s and that kinda limited what they could do. I have come to thing that the P-47 was the mostest dangerousest thing we produced. If we mounted a couple of 20mm cannons additionally, or in lieu of a couple of the 50s, I really wonder . . . .

Oh, I heartily agree. I recently finished rereading Rudel's Stuka Pilot and he was all about some ground attacking. He also was just a tough determined son-of-a-bitch. He mastered his airplane and got the most out of it. I think that the A-10 is a fascinating evolution of the type.

It's not just the ground attack, the A-10 carries avionics which allow it to dogfight like the F-35 can. It's not as fast as anything swing-wing but it's more maneuverable and can take a lot of damage without falling out of the sky. With long range missile capabilities from its avionics, it's more than just a tank buster/hired gunfighter.

But it's slow and yesterday's tech so the Air Force wants to retire it. The troops want more of them but the brass needs to feed the war machine.
