In 2007, David Clark was in a car accident. He had been out taking part in some underage drinking with some friends and the car he was in with his friends hit by a semi truck as the driver drifted into oncoming traffic. The collision killed David's friends, two instantly and one weeks later in the hospital. They were the lucky ones.
David was left in a coma. His parents were told that he would probably never wake up because of the damage to his brain, but they refused to let their 18 year old son die. What parent could pull the plug on their child like that? It would have been a mercy to David if they'd let him go. Especially considering what nightmare he woke up too.
January 23rd 2013 David woke up screaming. To him he could still see the lights of the big semi truck barreling down on him. He jerked awake screaming, his arms thrown out in front of him as if to stop the impact. It took him a minute to realize that he was laying down. He felt the tension in his arms as the IV's clung to him. An IV bag hung over his head, but it was bone dry as if no one had touched it in days.
He took a deep breath and sat up, his body protested stiff and weak from lack of use. With a grunt he reached up and tore the breathing tubes from his face and tossed them aside to the protest of the beeping machine beside his bedside.
The air was stale and smelt coppery to him. There was no trace of the antiseptic smell that floated in the air of most hospitals. David took a moment to figure out what had happened. Clearly the truck had hit the car and he had been hospitalized. How long ago was that?
He pressed the nurse button on the side of his bed and waited for a moment. Soft sunlight came through the blinds that hung caked in dust by the window. When was the last time someone had cleaned his room? Something was wrong.
Three minutes and no answer from the nurse. HE pushed the button again and held it. Nothing. Ten minutes. Twenty. Nothing.
His stomach growled and he was tired of waiting. He shifted and through the covers off. His legs protested by sending tingles through his body. It was like he needed to relearn how to use his limbs. The was pressure in his crotch and he saw that there were tubes coming from him down there. David looked at the silent door, hoping someone would come and help him.
He sat there for an hour, his stomach growling the whole time. Finally he couldn't take it any more. He needed to get out of here, something was very wrong about this place.
He grasped the tubes that came him his lower half and pulled the catheter out of him with a scream as the tape tore away pubes and the sensations of tubes deep in his body shifted. He gasped and tried to catch his breath, his arm trembling so much he knocked the IV stand down and that jerked the needle from his arm.
"Shit." He spat, his throat hurt and was very dry.
It took him a while before he could swing his legs off the bed, but he was getting feeling back as if his nerves were waking back up.
Finally David had managed to get on his feet, unsteadily but there. He needed water and food, he never thought he could ever feel this hungry. With a few careful steps he made his way to the door, his vision blurred and he swayed, but stayed standing.
He glanced on the chair and saw some cards laying on the seat. They looked old, like they'd been there a while. He slowly picked one up and opened it. A birthday card. Five birthday cards.
David felt his heart begin to pound. Five years. Had he been asleep for five years? That wasn't possible, was it?
He read the card slowly, Happy Birthday honey. Your Father and I love you very much and we know that you will wake up soon. We miss you and we will be here for you when you wake up.
"No," he whispered. Five years, he'd been in a coma for five years! He jerked upright and scrambled for the door. Where was everybody? They should be rushing into his room, especially if he was a coma victim waking up finally. Maybe they'd forgotten about him, figured that he wasn't going to ever wake up and just left him.
He jerked the door open and winced as the florescent light above him popped and rained out sparks onto the floor before him. He jerked his arm up and blocked out the flash, but slowly as the light faded the hallway was plundged into a dim glow.
Most of the lights in the hall were out, only one at the nurses desk remained working weakly. He felt his pulse begin to race again. What happened here? He took a soft step into the hall and felt something crinkle beneath his weight.
Paper, he saw looking down, paper was litered chaotically all over the floor. The smell of copper was much worse now, and wet smelling. David made his way slowly, but more steadily to the nurses desk.
He licked his lips and called out, "Hello?"
No answer.
He made it to the desk and groaned, the smell hit him like a load of bricks. If there had been anything in his stomach he would have thrown up. The source of the smell was a nurse, slumped against the wall. Her stomach was torn open and her entrails spilt into her lap. Most of the flesh on her chest was gone, leaving only bloody rib cage.
David spun and staggered down the hall. He had to get out of here. He looked around for anything he could use to help him. Fear gave him strength and he made his way through the hospital. Every hallway was just as bad or worse than the one he'd been in.
Glass litered the floor, trash, rubble. In one hall the ceiling had completely caved in and blocked his way with insulation and air duct. There were other bodies too, most looked torn up like the nurse. The smell was horrible and David gagged as he made his way to the fire exit.
He burst into the stairwell and shut the door behind him. Tears ran down his face and he cried, the sense of hopelessness nearly overwhelming him. What in the world had happened? Robbery? Who would rob a hospital and how would anyone tear open people like that?
He wanted his parents. His eyes went wide as he remembered his parents. Where they back there? No he hadn't seen them, all the bodies looked like staff or patients.
His fear for his parents willed him to his feet and he made his way down the stairs. The emergency lights were on and the stairway was lit. It didn't smell so bad so David hoped that his floor was the only one that the nightmare happened on and the ground floor would have the police ready to help him.
The fire exit door on the ground floor opened into the emergency room lobby. David screamed in anguish as he pulled the door open. Bodies were everywhere, every chair and almost every inch of the floor was covered by a body.
He crumbled and looked out into the mass of death. His knees pulled up to his chest and he felt his heart flutter in disspair. He had spent five years in a coma and while he was sleeping the world had ended. Everyone was dead.
No he refused to believe that. He gritted his teeth and got to his feet. With a roar he charged out of the stairwell and ran as fast as he could over the bodies, stepping in cold sticky piles of blood and inevitably stepping on a body or two as he charged.
HE hit the doors and screamed as they refused to open. He grunted and pushed but they would move. It took him a moment to realize that the doors slid back and forth, so he would have to force his hands between them and pull them open.
He grunted and started to work his fingers between the doors. "Come on you fucker." He hissed as he shoved his hand into the space.
Something behind him groaned, and David jerked his head around. Nothing moved, just bodies upon bodies. He grunted against the door and they opened a few inches. He wedged his hand further and began to push. The doors opened a little more and behind him the groan came again, only louder.
He snapped his head around and watched the bodies. "Hello!?" He called.
Then he saw it. A bodies pushed itself up to its knees from the pile in the center of the room. David's eyes widened in horror as he saw the clearly dead man turn his head toward David. The man was definately dead, he was missing the bottom of his jaw and on of his arms.
Yet the body got to its feet slowly and stiffly. David watched in horror as the dead man took a step toward him, tripped over a body in front of it, then try to get back up again, groaning.
David panicked and began to shove his whole strength into the door. All his weakened muscles could summon up. The door screeched and slid open enough for David to run out.
Outside was no better. All around the build were countless bodies, some covered by sheets, others not. Everywhere he looked there were cars and trucks, even military vehicles and all of them were abandoned. There had been some kind of stand at the hospital that had not been successful.
Groaning came behind him and he saw the dead man, the zombie trying to force itself through the crack between the doors. It was stuck though, because it couldn't squeeze itself through the space, nor force the doors open further with only one arm.
David was in an adrinaline fueled rush. He needed to get somewhere safe. He needed to get home. The hospital was ten miles from his home easily, he'd never be able to walk there.
He bit his lip and glanced at an abandoned Toyota pick-up. Fuck it, if the world was over then who cared if he borrowed a truck that probably belonged to one of the bodies that littered the ground.
The truck was unlocked and the keys were laying carelessly on the seat. David said a thank-you for small miracles as the truck fired up easily. He took one last glance at the zombie, still trying to get out of the hospital and sped off. He gripped the wheel and wished that he would wake up again.
"Fucking zombie!" He gasped in disbelief.
