Walking Dead RP OOC (for Halloween)

I had something all written up last night, decided to sleep on it. This morning as im preparing pumpkin pie I get an even better idea...

Off to rewrite.

At this point, we're still having new folks in the first group...the villain group has not been introduced yet in the IC thread. Guess were it up to me, would wanna see something other than the stereotypical "kick ass zombie killer" kind of survivor. After a year after the outbreak, assuming everyone has some fighting ability, and can handle themselves and hold their own...but every character wading through a zombie horde matter-of-factly killing walkers like it's routine? No...not my thing, I guess.

I had been thinking of joining this some time ago because zombie apocalypse (do I have to justify it any further than that? ), but that was the reason I wasn´t too into it. Every single zombie RP that´s been done here in Lit has been like that: over-powered head-smashing Big Damn Heroes.

That said, I haven´t gotten around to reading how you guys have actually gone about with this...

We do have some just-survivers around.

I would never be so presumptuous to say that I am at all a better writer than anyone else I write with, but I AM my own worst critic. I think I hold myself to a very high standard when making my characters, wanting them to be as realistic as possible, while still fitting into the story itself.

Especially when creating a protagonist character, I always put a lot of thought into it, and ask myself these questions during creation, "Does the character seem feasible? Is he/she realistic? How would I react in this scenario? Can the reader relate to the character on any level?" If the answer is no, I typically scrap the character and start over. Villainous characters are a bit more difficult to keep realistic, but I do make the attempt there as well.

That said, I HAVE seen what you are talking about in other threads, Katamari...the problem with these unrealistic power characters is that in a cooperative story, if one character is overpowered, it pretty much destroys any group dynamic. That character would never NEED a group...they could handle anything, and would have no realistic motivation for needing to be around others other than companionship. The power balance of the group ends up skewed.

To be honest, there are certain things even in THIS thread, in the current group of character profiles that I read or in the IC thread where, after reading them, had the thought, "Well...they seem to have been overly prepared for the zombie apocalypse" or "Hmm...he/she fights a little TOO well." I'm pretty easygoing, and although the realist in me rebels at these things, and I know I wouldn't do it for MY character, in cooperative stories like this, I'll allow some creative license if it can at all be explained to any degree of realism. However, if it is something so wildly out there that it doesn't make sense at all to me, I'll definitely call it out in the OOC...as I would hope others would do for me as well.

At any rate, if you do decide to read the story, and afterwards, you'd like join us, feel free to make a profile. Although it has been awhile and not sure if you remember me, I have written with you before, and it'd be fun to write with you again. :)

Rachel Cavanaugh

Age: 24

Physical appearance: Tall, long red hair, blue eyes, thin from living on very little food, unassumingly pretty.

Education: Master's degree in Biology

Rachel Cavanaugh had a plush upbringing in Nashville, her father owned several businesses in the area and never wanted for anything. Her mother left when she was small, Rachel never knew why and her father refused to tell her. She grew up reserved, always cautious of other people and their intentions. She found most people only befriended her when they found out her last name and about the money attached to it.

She never was very girly, Rachel had all sorts of hobbies that a “woman of good breeding” was discouraged of. She learned how to climb and rappel on a vacation in Switzerland and took regular trips to Utah or Washington to practice. Climbing made her feel powerful and strong. She also took up gardening at the country house, soon after she discovered her love for biology. Her father used to say if he wanted Rachel to take an interest in something all he had to do was cover it in a layer of dirt and she would embrace it wholeheartedly, a saying he repeated often and it never failed to elicit an eyeroll from his only daughter.

When the outbreak occurred Rachel was staying at the house in the country, her cell phone went haywire with calls, texts, alerts, emails…you name it. She spoke to her father once, and then the line went dead. The house was located near a small town and Rachel braved the mayhem to stock up at the local bulk foods store. Luckily panic hadn’t set in yet since the National Guard and local police secured everything within city limits. The decline was slow at first and then all at once. The town was overrun, a state of emergency declared, supply lines were cut off. Luckily by then Rachel had enough forethought to use her wealth to stockpile supplies. She read books, tended the garden, and it was actually kind of peaceful for awhile. Until people started looting what was left. She started living in fear; she slept in the attic just in case someone broke in the middle of the night to rummage around for food. Rachel quickly learned how to hide her pantry items in very unassuming places around the house, small cans of soup fit rather well between the plush cushions on the couch and no one ever looked there. She had no special skills for defense; she was just a young woman on her own trying to survive. Hiding was her skill set. Cowardly perhaps but it had kept her alive thus far.

The solitude didn’t sit well with her. Rachel’s body changed; she became willowy thin, her alabaster skin looked sallow and clammy all the time, and her blue eyes were dull. When spring finally came she resolved to get off the property one way or another, more than anything Rachel desired companionship, and protection. She longed to hear another person’s voice, to have a conversation. She packed her gear bag, filled her camelback at the spigot in the barn and walked to town by herself. Rachel was almost convinced she would never see another human being again, and she didn’t for almost a week. She was living in a treehouse, a very small room up in a huge oak tree that overlooked a section of town. Rachel had almost given up on finding anyone; her supplies were running dangerously low. She had a decision to make, walk back home or explore the town a little and hope she could meet someone who could keep her safer than she was on her own.

So i wrote a novel...

I think Rachel will make herself known when she sees Mathilda out foraging for food in the neighborhood. She's going to be very cautious and probably a little standoffish at first. She's been alone for an entire year. Her MO is mainly hiding from the walkers, she has no idea how to fight one off. (Hence the climbing skills coming into play, walkers can't climb trees)

Her strength is going to be the fact that she has access to resources back at the house, and her knowledge about plants/animals. She knows how to cultivate food on a long term basis.

I like Rachel's bio. Her personality is a bit like Jessa's it seems and I think that's interesting since they have nothing in common really except for the fact that they're both from Tennessee.
---
On a different topic.. I think it would be interesting to have a character that is a bit more.. lively? It would be interesting, but I'm not sure it would be believable. Anyone have an opinion?

You mean like a Daryl type?

I considered writing a mentally unstable person (think River from Firefly). Well meaning but seriously damaged. Perhaps I will write her anyway and include her later...

No.. I think we have Daryl type people, maybe not completely Daryl.. but close. I was thinking more along the lines of someone who always seems to be "happy" and "bubbly". The type of person who always looks on the bright side. She (or I guess it could be a he...) would have almost zero fighting ability. The main reason they have survived is because she/he has really good luck, and is very fast on her feet. Everyone is so... serious. Which I guess they should be since it's a zombie apocalypse.. which is why I said that the idea probably wouldn't be believable.

I see what you mean....not sure about the believability though like you said. Unless than person was part of a larger group and had protection the chances of them surviving a year into it are very slim.

Yeah.. but when you said the thing about a larger group.. a thought just popped into my head. What if she had been a member of a larger group, but ended up getting separated. In the other group she was something like a caregiver (think nurse w/out the actual training). Or perhaps she'd be more like a shrink type person.. and everyone had come to her with their worries or whatever because nothing really seemed to get to her. I was even thinking of her maybe growing up on the streets before this, which would explain why she's "tough" without really being too tough, does that make sense?

True, she'd have to have that type of backstory for it to work. It's definitely plausible though.

I think any group could use a little light-heartedness. But I'll wait to be sure it's okay with some other people before I actually make the character.

I think that a bit of light-heartedness and humor is a great de-stresser, and anyone fighting to survive during a zombie apocalypse would basically be walking around like a raw nerve. They would need an outlet, and humor is a great defense mechanism to keep sanity.

That said, the setting IS pretty traumatic, so we'd want to be careful how this is played. An amusing witty comment here and there works fine, or an occasional joke or funny story to lighten the mood is fine, but were it me, doubt I'd ever trust my life to someone who continually jokes, pranks, and does slapstick comedy for a laugh. I'd be worried they were crazy, or just do not take anything seriously enough to care. There needs to be a fine line...serious enough to be trusted, yet able to lighten the mood and morale of the group.

Fleur's Character Profile

Character Profile: Fleur
Age:25
Description: English. 5ft2 and 100lbs give or take a little. White with long brown hair that reaches her heart-shaped ass. Big expressive brown eyes. Kissable pastel pink lips. The perky small bust of youth coupled with a toned but not muscular body, which is a little on the thin side due to current circumstances.

Bio: Fleur (real name Rose Calthorpe - but nobody has called her that in years, 9 to be exact) ran away from home at 16. She had a 'privileged' upbringing, if you could call it that. Having been sent away to boarding school half way across the country by her mother at the age of 11, only to return home after her GCSEs to find her mother had remarried a very nasty man. The man had done unspeakable things to her one night that summer. Her mother refused to believe her, calling her a "troublemaker".

So she did the only thing she could do, she ran. With only the clothes on her back and her passport, she headed for London. From there, she worked her way through odd jobs and saved enough money to buy a ticket to Bangkok. She travelled extensively throughout Asia (Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Nepal, India), working as she went, until she was 21. By then she had grown into herself and knew the type of person she wanted to be. Appreciating the simple life of those less fortunate, she realised that all she needed to be happy was a roof over her head, food and the people she called family (the friends she made on the road).

Having an affinity with nature, she left India (where she was volunteering at an animal shelter) and entered Australia on a working holiday visa and WWOOFed her way around the country, then onto New Zealand and finally the US. For those 3 and a bit years, she studied: organic farming; permaculture; natural building, and; for the 6 months prior to the outbreak she was working at a small holding down in Iowa.

She believed in sustainabity, caring for the environment and was a practicing vegan before the outbreak occurred (but has since killed and eaten animals). She wears organic cottons, hemp and bamboo clothing. By all accounts, a modern day hippie - believing that you needed to respect the earth and its inhabitants. That was until this all started.

She carries:
  • 1 farming machete
  • 2 pistols (from the farm)
  • an half empty 70lt backpack
  • Solar panel + USB outlet
  • Battery charger + rechargeable batteries
  • an old iPhone (for music and looking at photos of her travels)
  • Dollars (she uses them to help light fires)
  • Passport (she keeps it to look at her stamps when she feels lonely)
  • Clothes + shoes (flip flops and hiking boots)
  • Sleeping bag
  • Disposable gas lighter
  • Travel cutlery
  • Castille soap
  • Essential oils
  • Toothbrush, hairbrush, etc.
  • Journal and pencil
  • Water bottle and bladder filled with water
  • Steripen + iodine tablets (from her backpacking travels)
  • Foldable bucket
  • Headlamp
  • Small First Aid kit + travel sewing pack
  • Baby wipes + toilet roll
  • Muslin cloth
  • Twine
  • Food: dried pulses, grains, dried fruit, vegetable stock powder, dried spices and nuts and seeds.

Okay, I'm a little lost regarding poor Shadow.

Some posts say that the dog was bit, and other posts say that he only got cut. Which is it?

Okay, I'm going to go ahead and post a bio for another character that I'll be using. She may become a member of this group at some point soon.

Character Bio

Name: Alicia "Ace" Roberts

Age: 19

Appearance: Ace is 5'5 in height. She has tan skin from hours in the sunlight. Her light brown hair is cut short in an almost pixie style. Her eyes are blue. Her build is pretty thin, and she doesn't have much of a body to speak of.

Personality: Ace is pretty easy going, and takes things as they come. She could be called bubbly, optimistic, street smart, and spunky. It doesn't seem like anything really brings her down, at least for very long. Please don't think that just because she is easy going, she isn't responsible.. because that's not the case. Her years on the streets has taught her that she needs to be responsible and take care of the people that depend on her.

Background: Ace never knew her real parents. She doesn't know whether they died before she was born or if they just didn't want her. She didn't really think about it much either. She believed that there was enough to worry about, so why go looking for more? She was a ward of the state and moved from foster family to foster family until she turned 13 and decided to run away and live on the street. The only things that she took with her when she ran away were a few outfits, a couple of dollars, and her guitar. She survived on the streets by enhancing her street smarts, thinking and running fast, and yes... the age old art of pick-pocketing. She never stole for the sake of stealing, only to survive. She also played her guitar on the sidewalk to get tips. She didn't ever really have any fighting skills, only the basic self-defense skills and the ability to run faster than almost anyone that she's met. Every once in a while Ace would live with other people around her age. She enjoyed the company, but knew that it wouldn't be permanent. Street kids never stayed together for long periods of time.

Ace's first experience with the undead happened when she was living in the city under a bridge with a group of other homeless people. Screaming woke her up. There was just enough light to see silhouettes, but something told her to be quiet and just watch from a distance. Eventually she was able to make out what looked like one person leaning down over another person, and heard the sounds of someone eating very loudly. She knew something was up so she very quietly and very quickly gathered her belongings and made a run for it, avoiding the....whatever it was. By the time morning arrived, she had seen enough to know something horrible was going on. At first, Ace stayed to herself, surviving much like she did before... grabbing food from stores (when there was some left to take) and hunting for safe places to sleep.

It was during one of those times that she ran into two small children. She had just come out of the back window of a small store when she spotted the children, a boy and a girl. The girl was crying and the boy was trying to keep her calm while trying to back away from an approaching walker. Acting without thinking, Ace rushed out, grabbed the children’s' hands and pulled them with her toward one of the hiding spots that she used. She could tell that the children hadn't eaten in a while, so she gave them some of her food and helped them calm down. Eventually they calmed down enough to tell her their names and that they had been living with their parents and some other survivors, but that they had seen a kitten and went chasing after it without anyone knowing. The children said that they knew how to get back to their camp site, and so Ace agreed to help them get back to their family.

The family was very thankful that Ace had taken care of them, and the group insisted that she stay with them. She agreed, knowing that she probably wouldn't survive very long on her own. There were a lot of children in the group, so Ace took it upon herself to be the caretaker of them. She was pretty good at keeping them happy, and even had a calming effect on other people in the group. The group stayed in their campsite for a very long time and it had even come to seem like home. However, like many other things in Ace's life... that wasn't going to last for much longer.

A walker somehow managed to get into the building that they had been living in. Nearly everyone made it out without any problem... but when Ace was on her way out, she saw one of the children run back into the building because he had forgotten his favorite stuffed animal that was like a safety net for him. Ace ran back into the building to look for the boy, and when she found him, her heart sank. The boy was cowering in a corner with the walker hovering over him. The boy was screaming and lashing out his hand to try to keep the walker away. Ace ran up to the boy and the walker, grabbed the walker by what remained of its clothes and pulled it away from the boy. She told the boy to run as she tried to sling the walker across the room. She then grabbed the boy's hand and ran away. When Ace thought it was safe enough to stop running, she and the boy stopped to catch their breath. That's when she saw that the boy had been bitten. Ace knew what that meant, but comforted the little boy. She held him and sung him lullabies until he slipped away. She didn't have the heart to do what she knew needed to be done. In fact, she had barely ever done it to adults, let alone children. So she left before the boy's corpse came back to life.

Now Ace was once again alone. She knew that she would be okay for a while by herself... but she found herself missing the safety net that had come with being a part of a group.

Items in her possession:
sleeping bag
guitar
some vegitables that she picked from a garden
some canned food items

I think shadow needs to survive regardless. (Can't kill off a dog, IMO.) I think it should be a bite but we actually know for sure that dogs don't "turn". Everyone happy with that?

Maybe he is just fatigued and sick for a few days?

Also, I'm assuming Nick, Aaron and Jack go to the Church as they've already discussed it. Let me know if anyone else goes, I can edit my post or they could be lagging a bit behind...

Oh, Wyld52771, would you mind updating the character links as I've found that post invaluable for reference thus far and I am getting confused.

I think Ldy was the first to say that it was a cut, and since it's her "character" I think she's got more say than we do. I'm honestly a little torn on the whole bite/cut thing.

Yeah, that's super fair; I'm happy to go back and change mine to "he was wounded and limped" or something to that effect.

Done. :)

Well I know Mathilda was the one who was going to the gardens and Jack was going to accompany her. I'm not sure about Aaron or Nick. Ask them to make sure.
