I started walking for about fifteen minutes a day last spring and for the past three months am up to a little over two miles a day. Lost an inch or two in the waist and intend to keep it up as much as possible. I know a girl a few years younger who started walking in January and lost more than twenty pounds. Maybe this will help convince some of you as well. Walking is a great low impact activity!

How long does 2 miles take?

I could stand to lose 2-3 inches off my waist.

I walk a little faster than normal and for me about an hour and twenty minutes. I walk around a subdivision about a half mile away and usually one and a half times around it.

Interesting.

Pretty soon I will actually be able to spare 1-1.5 hours a day! Maybe I'll start.

It'll be fun walking in the winter though.

You know I'm in. I can't walk far with my knees, but I'm no longer walking from park bench to park bench.

Instead of walking in the park across the street all the time, I'm walking the sidewalks. Why? Because this way I can see exactly how much I can do without the temptation of the park benches.

Winter (without the ice and snow) is actually easier to me than the summer. Like Wally said, you heat up; walking in the summer doesn't cool you down.

Well its around 50 like last nite and hopefully not as windy, so it looks like a 'go ' again tonight.

I started walking a mile each morning ... I haven't seen any changes yet, but I have faith ;)

It was freaking COLD this morning  Hint ... wear a stocking hat and mittens when it's 42 degrees out!

I'll take that advice.

I had to wear one of those sweater shirts last nite and will again tonight.

I wore a sweatshirt and sweat pants this morning ... it wasn't enough ... but then I'm a weakling when it comes to the cold :D

I actually warm up after about ten minutes or so. But then I have some 'excess' insulation to get rid of!

I power walk but my hands and nose still get cold :p I'm back in the house in 16 minutes. I have a feeling I'll get faster and faster on that mile as it gets colder

I don't have any joint problems but I am going to get some more fish/cod liver oil capsules. I've been told it helps lubricate the joints and the omega3 fatty acids are good for the ticker.

I'll have to try that. My knees and ankles aren't keeping up with me very well.

Did you say you haven't walked yet tonight?

I did walk tonight! The temp was 50F but no wind like the night before. I am looking forward to my next walk along with dealing with yet another roofing contractor! Roof damage due to hail but a blessing cuz the roof needs to be re-done anyway.

Brrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 38 degrees this morning!!!!! 1 mile = 16 minutes. Grrrrrr ... I thought I had made better timing

I was raised with what I call an 'old wives tale' that teaches us to eat three substantial meals a day and then scold the children for snacking. Nothing further from the truth! When you eat, your body processes the food into energy/glucose. Big meals mean a lot of glucose meaning the body must produce more insulin to control it. Is it any wonder the childhood obesity and diabetes among children and adults is skyrocketing? Eating or grazing like kids do is the healthiest way to dine. I like to munch on carrots, eat a whole tomato or a salad. My stockbroker used to munch carrots and celery for lunch or whenever and he drove a desk. At home, I will heat up a can of kidney, butter or lima beans. Processed foods contain sodium so one of these days I am going to visit the health food store and buy the raw/real thing! Do a google search on healthful nuts. Plus the fiber from veggies is good for ya! Weightloss is a real bitch but to maintain your weight once you get there means a change of eating habits. I long ago severely limited my consumption of 'fast foods' and stick to whole grain bread and that means I read the 'fine print.' I like a fried egg on a slice of bread with mayonnaise for breakfast but I stay 'light' on most everything including salad dressings. By light, I mean the light version as well as the serving. I have a friend a little younger than me that regularly loses 30 pounds on the Atkins diet and walking 3-4 miles a day and then gaining it all back. Obviously, his 'diet' is not sustainable and it isn't good for the heart either. Hopefully some of you out there will find some good in this and there is more to come.

Walk time is on for tonight!

I love walking.........and will walk in all weathers. My favourite walks are either through the woods or along the coast......but as I'm lucky to live in the country I can walk anywhere without the temptation of shop windows :D
