I've been following a lead to try and develop my freelance journalism career, and 2 friday's ago I came across a site that I found very interesting. I emailed them with some of my ideas and the person I was emailing (i think it's the deputy editor of the site) seemed to be very enthusiastic about my email. She said the editor of the relevant section would be back in the office last week, and I should expect a reply 'very soon'.

Suffice to say, I've recieved nothing yet, so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about how long I should wait before sending a follow up email, or what to put it in? Or if I should not send anything at all?

Depends why and how long the editor was out of the office. Assuming they were on holidays, at a minimum I'd give the person a couple of days to catch up. A week is more than enough for a polite follow-up.
