Kelsey sat on the counter behind the kitchen doors, swinging her feet softly back and fourth. This waitressing job used to bring in good money, but as the economy took a downturn, the restaurant was seeing less and less customers. She'd had two tables so far this evening but both of them were gone. Bored, she jumped down, and went to check her reflection in the mirror they had hanging in back.

She wasn't really vain, and normally was minimally concerned with her looks, but the money in her pocket proved people liked a waitress who was easy on the eyes. She tousled her shoulder length brown hair, and applied a fresh coat of lip gloss to her lips. Her hazel eyes were normally behind glasses, but she always wore contacts to work. After refastening her apron around her slim waist, she walked back over to the counter, about to hop up, but heard the bells by the door jingle before she could. With a smile she made her way to the front of the restaurant to greet the new customer.

"Hi there! My name's Kelsey, I'll be taking care of you tonight. Sit anywhere you'd like."

He was doing something he tried to never do: eating out by himself. It made him feel a little pathetic anytime he did it. But, since his girlfriend had left him, he'd lost his usual dinner partner.

Not to mention he hadn't felt much like spending time at the apartment they shared up until a week ago.

The waitress, who introduced herself as Kelsey, was friendly enough, at least. (She, at least, didn't seem to be judging him for going out by himself.)

He offered Kelsey a quick "Thank you", then sat at a booth by the window.

It occurred to him, as the waitress left to get him a glass of water, that he was feeling entirely too sorry for himself. Granted, he was probably well within the accepted "mourning period" after a recent breakup, but he was only making things worse for himself by moping about it.

He decided that he was going to cheer himself up tonight. Have some fun. The night was young....maybe after grabbing some dinner he'd call up a few friends, hit the town like they used to. (Before Megan took over his life, that is...he shook his head, thinking about how he really was better off without her...)

Who knows? He might even hit on the waitress (who was quite easy on the eyes), just like old times.

Kelsey disappeared behind the kitchen doors and poured a glass of ice water for the customer. Single customers usually sucked, because the bill was never that high, thus the tip was never that impressive either, but at least this one wasn't some 'wise old man' offering her advice about staying in school, and telling her about 'back in his day'. That was the majority of the 'loners' she got. Maybe with this guy she could even flirt her way into a good tip. She entertained the idea of unbuttoning her blouse, just a button, for the same reason, but decided against it...for now. With a wry grin at the mere thought of teasing a customer, she made her way back through the doors.

"Here's some water to start you off with. Would you like anything else to drink?"

He found his eyes lingering at the small amount of cleavage the waitress was showing as she bent over to set down his glass and talk to him. A smile passed his lips as he imagined himself offering to raise her tip for every button she undid on her blouse....

It had been a long time since he checked out a girl without feeling guilty...

It felt good.

"I'll take just about anything from the bar" he said with a laugh. "It's been a very long week. I don't really care what, honestly.....surprise me." He smiled. "If I like it I'll probably order about five more"

She suppressed a grin as she thought she saw his eyes travel a little bit south...perhaps he was game after all. After getting his order, she nodded.

"Sorry to hear that, I'll be right back with my specialty."

She turned and walked behind the bar, mixing him up the promised drink. He seemed to be in the mood for something hard, and not the type to like anything fruity. While her back was turned to him, and her hands appearing busy with the drink, she decided to let one button go...he seemed like he was having a rough time of things, and she was feeling a little devious, so why not?

With drink in hand, she made her way back to his table. She reached past where his glass of water was sitting to set the glass down, giving him a slightly longer, and slightly closer view of her now even more exposed breasts. She'd never been quite this forward with anyone, and suddenly blushed at herself as straightened herself to take his order.

"Know what you'd like to eat or do you need another minute?"

He shamelessly checked out her ass as she walked back to the bar. It was somehow freeing, to let himself be single again, out on the prowl. Not to mention that she had a fantastic ass...

Was it just his imagination, or was she showing more cleavage as she bent over to set down his drink? Lingering a little longer, giving him a better view? Nah...couldn't be.

"Honestly, I haven't even bothered to look at the menu. What would you recommend?" He resisted the urge to drop some kind of really awful pickup line ("Are you on the menu?"). Taking a sip of his drink, he smiled. "This is fantastic....what is it?"

She absent mindedly ran her fingers through her hair as she went through a list of favorites in her head.

"Well...the chicken parmesan is really popular...but if you ask me, the best thing on the menu is the prime rib. A little extra, but totally worth it."

She gave him a coy smile as he asked what was in the drink she'd given him.

"Like I said...it's my specialty. Gotta come back if you want more."

"Okay, I'll take your word for it and get the prime rib. It better be worth it though" He said with a laugh.

"You're definitely working your way to a nice tip." He gave her a little wink. "I was having a pretty bad day before I came in here. I guess there's some advantages to being the only customer in the place."

With a smile, he added, "I'm John, by the way."

It occurred to him as she walked away that he was probably a little too talkative for a customer, but he figured she might enjoy it. Gotta be boring working an empty restaurant, right?
