It's a complex issue with more than one point of view. What's yours?

Problem Ishmael; what does the phrase "wage discrimination" mean? Are you talking about 2 men doing the same job equally well but they are not of the same race? Does seniority count? Who gets to decide the quality of their work?

One more question; are there any external factors, family, personality honesty etc and how important is the job?

I don't agree with wage discrimination (except in fields where one gender performs better than the other), but I don't think that there should be laws against it. I think that private businesses should be able to pay their employees any amount for any reason. We should not outlaw assholishness.

Hence the complexity of the issue.

Gender-based wage discrimination is alive and well in Australia.
I was recently offered a job in an industry predominantly staffed by men. For the EXACT same position as a man, I would get $100 less per day.
How is that fair?

Imagine that. Treating someone differently than someone else just because of the way they were born! People can be mean.

I thought about not responding, but you know what? I will.

I would NEVER discriminate wage parity because of gender OR race.
If you are qualified, then you deserve EXACTLY the same pay regardless.
My personal issues have never, not once, come into play when it comes to the people I have employed.
And yes - I have employed those that I personally am uncomfortable with.
Work is work, end of story.

I know it's fucked up, but I take a little consolation in the fact that if we're both on a sinking ship, I'm the one who gets the life raft.

See, this is what you can't do. I was screwing with you, so your reaction should have been to either ignore me or reply with a joke. You give people a reaction, and that's why they do it. There are lots of people here that are way more racist than you, but they're not fun to poke.

I'm not trying to make you look stupid, I'm trying to help you out for the future.

Don't try and help me.
I am perfectly fine and comfortable with who I am, tyvm.

You want me to lie? You want me to say I would never employ someone who I am uncomfortable with?
Work is work - very different to personal life and personal preferences.

And you missed my point entirely. Carry on.

You can buy into Blob's 'reinforcement' line or not.

So let me ask you darlin', if your were selling something would you low ball it?

It's negotiation, the one thing that women are wont to do for some reason.

There is another problem here, you assume that you were offered the lower salary because you're a woman. What evidence do you have of that? Beyond anecdotal, none.

The stats on salary, men vs women, are quite true. And they are gender related but to presume that is the only reason is an avoidance of the truth.

There are so many reasons that I find it difficult as to where to start, so you kick it off and I'll just counter on the points not based on emotion.

Let's go specific, shall we?

The position offered was as a coxswain....
I have over 15yrs experience in this position.
The people I would have been working with, have exactly the same qualification without the years of experience (in fact, one of the guys has only just qualified with the minimum sea time).
Why should I take a $100/day LESS salary, when I have proof of ability and many more years sea time?

You shouldn't, did you counter or just walk away?

I'm betting you walked away for reasons not yet mentioned.

I walked away, after making my objections known.
Now, I'm being hunted by two companies.
I have yet to decide.

You called it

You're welcome.

*sigh* If only others on the gb accepted (regardless of my views) my HONESTY

For the most part we're both figments of their imagination.

I'm an asshole and you're a bimbo. So it goes.

Retired for a few years, but recall forty-plus years of work. With regards to wage disparity I offer this:

As far back as I can recall the gals arrived at work on the dot of starting time. Galz do not arrive early. They also leave on the dot, no gal sticks around the job after quitting time. I conclude its becuz galz got plenty of toil before and after work. But single, childless galz do the same.

Guys arrive to work early and stay late. Its when we socialize and bond.

I recall something else. Back in the 70s I was a construction manager for a large company. A few of my employees were female. On Secretary Day the company treated all the secretaries to lunch at a popular steak house. My galz wanted to go, too. I said NO, youre not secretaries. They werent secretaries and the occasion wasnt GAL DAY.

I always thought that when you are at war, there is no discrimination. Kill or be killed is pretty simple.

Its true, and a lesson I had to learn in Vietnam. Stripped of its chrome, mudflaps, and fuzzy dice the issue is, HOW BAD DO I WANNA LIVE.

I think it is the same as employer discrimination.

Maybe we should adopt the attitude that you have to take the first job offered to you at the wage set by the non-binding employment iPAB...

;) ;)

Of course, you would submit your work application to the government to make sure you were not cherry-picking employers.
