Has it been common practice in past administrations for the VP to be present whenever the President speaks or has a sit down meeting with others? It seems like every time the network news cameras are focused on the POTUS, the VP is right there also.

Sure, Pence followed Trump around like a puppy.

It's not unusual at all.

The VP's office is largely ceremonial, so they like to trot them out when the cameras come on.

This sounds like the beginnings of another beige suit "controversy".

Given the concerns about the president’s condition, it makes sense to have the vp present for photos.

Like a vulture, right?

Out of curiosity - what's a "beige suit" controversy?

LOL - I have a whole theory about people with drive beige cars, but I'm pretty sure it's not the same.

One of the big scandals of the Obama admin.

No, this was just in the Trump era. They, in fact, have traditionally only rarely been together in a public event so that an assassination attempt couldn't get them both together. Only the uninformed Trumpers didn't understand this principle.

Hahaha - too funny. I must have missed that controversy entirely.

I do love the "it's a sign of the Illuminati" controversies that arise now and then around pins, scarves, designs, etc.

It depends on both the issue being highlighted and who the president is. You never saw many joint Trump-Pence appearances, but Trump was not one to share the spotlight.

Also, there's not nearly as much travel going on for obvious reasons, so the veep is probably available more readily.

Actually, a true point being made is that you actually did see Pence a lot in the background. That was usually in the protection of the White House (although I don't think I'd stand in front of a window there, even though they are bulletproof). You won't see many photos of the president and vice president sitting next to each other in the president's box at Ford's Theater. There's a very good security reason for that.
