Vote alterations

A couple of times in the last year I've noticed the count number of the votes on various of my submissions has altered downwards. It does alter the average 'score' but I'm not greatly bothered since few read my works. Just curious is all that alterations could occur retroactively... j

We refer to those as 'troll sweeps' here in the AH, jacinta.

Lit goes through the stories occasionally and removes what it regards as invalid votes. i.e. multiple votes from the same ISP, votes spammed from a single user etc.

Mostly though, it gets rid of troll votes, meaning those who vote ones on a story for reasons other than its quality.

It gets rid of those fives too. Though why someone would do that is beyond me. I had a whopping 5 votes on my latest poem, and not a good score mind you, but in the last sweep I lost 3 of those votes and .5 points. I don't want vindictive ones but I also don't want sympathetic fives. If my work ain't up to snuff, fuckin' say so... :D :p

The duplicate 5s might be unintentional, like double posts on the forums. If your ISP stutters, it would be easy to record two votes instead of one.

Getting any votes on poetry is difficult. At least it is for my so-called poetry.

I hear ya, Og. I actually have 15 votes on Butterflies, with over 3200 views. I also have a few poems with only 2 or 3 votes total. I think I figured out, if a person writes a poem with a set form, or freeverse that's relatively obscure it might get some votes. Otherwise, hmm... It would be great to hear what's 'wrong' with the ones that have a low score though, especially the songs.

Many thanks for the replies, explains much. Having a place to post my work far outweighs the lack of feedback or votes. The highest voting and greatest views are with those works I don't care to write more than once, for the practice. j

I know what you mean. I seem to be having a hard time getting feedback on anything at the moment.

Nice quote

Wow, I've never heard an author except me say that. There are so many that take offense over anything. I'm not a poetry guy but I promise to check one of yours out, just because that was cool. The only problem is that I wouldn't know good poetry from bad ones, so my opinion would be stupid. Oh well, why should today be any different from any other?

This post has no purpose. I'm just lamenting to the only people who understand. It looks like a troll sweep was just done on my story and I lost on the order of 350 votes. 819 to 400 something. I've seen adjustments on my story before, but this one was still a shocker. I have been very conscious to not vote for my own stories, so, wow, what were people doing out there? I guess some small number of people really enjoyed the story so that they voted more than once, but geez. 350 duplicate votes?

So to future people who may like a story of mine, please only vote once. Instead send me feedback letting me know why you liked or didn't like the story. I will even write back and we can discuss it. It would be much better that way. Slinking off back to my writing now....

If you have over 100 votes on a story as I do on one, then if someone gives you a five, it does not much matter (it takes 10 five's to affect a score at that point), if someone gives a 1, it matters a bit more, but not greatly in the same way. An increase of votes means more of a median average, I think, (the more votes you have, the less of an impact a 5 or 1 has) but Lauren Hynde can answer this question best on the board. :)

Edit to add - Laurel does not sweep one's unless you ask or unless there is a contest ;) - when she does, she removes a 5 vote to even the odds I believe. As for duplicate's? My lover and I have the same ISP, and only mine or his is ever registered by Lit, even if we are different people. :)

One suggestion for drumming up a little attention for your stories is to place a link to your member page in your signature line here on the boards. Of course, for this to work well (or at all) you must post on the boards from time to time so that folks have a chance to even see the link, but it's worth a shot.

I have one story that has eight votes and is still at a 5.00. I'm wondering if that will alter when the next troll sweep goes through.

If you are correct in this assertion, then why have you NOT been by to read my new story? Hmm?

No one asked me  - lol -

I have been busy trying to call two Texas hoes, aside from working, saving baby pidgeons and attending weddings. lol

You tried to call? Where was I?

Working, huh? WTF is up with pidgeons? Moved on from squirrels already?

p.s. I have a new story out. 3 K word romp. (Finally, I was able to write a shorty.) What'd you wear to the weddings?

Missed you 'round here lately.

Well, yes I tried and no one was home. :) We have baby pigeons on the balcony off my bedroom. We feed and water them so they get fat and FLY AWAY SOON before they shit all over the place.

3k? That's SHORT!? Is it in your sig line? I will try, but can't promise.

The wedding - a pin striped suit and white shirt, with new funky hairdo - I looked hhhhHOT! My brother looked hot also, but he is my brother. :D The bride looked nice - lol. :catroar:

Bummer. I'm sorry I missed it. :(
You, I think I'll call, Domme Doolittle. (We have a nest of birds in the top corner of our front porch. We don't feed them or water them and they still shit all over the place. )

Yes, for me, 3K is very short. *sigh* I am a wordy bitch.

And NO I wasn't drooling at the thought of you in a suit, so don't even go there!

Ok...I'm ashamed of myself now. I'll never again bitch that I have a low vote count on one of my poems. Not when you guys are having so much trouble getting votes and the highest number of views that I have is less that 500 but only one vote count is under 10.

I'm not much of a poetry reader, really, but I shall go read and vote on something of you guys' right now.

Well you are sexy enough in nothing, and that suits me fine - lol

Maybe I got the wrong phone number? Who knows. I left a message wherever I sent my voice :D and I am sure someone got a thrill or terror! LOL

Interesting, I must not have voted on this story yet.

I think your screen name is great. My name is only clever if you happen to know that my initials are M-Y, and even then clever is a strong word for it.

And to clarify I am deeply honored by the votes I have gotten. I was just stunned to learn that hundreds were fakes.
