I'm reading Erich von Manstein's memoirs.

Manstein was Hitler's best military commander and a thorn in Hitler's paw.

In the memoirs von Manstein notes some facts the Russians confirm, and most historians ignore: WHEN YOUR INTENTIONS ARE HOSTILE YOU PLACE YOUR MILITARY ASSETS CLOSE TO THE TARGET, WHEN YOUR INTENT IS DEFENSIVE YOU PLACE YOUR ASSETS OUT OF HARMS WAY. He wrote at length about why Poland lost its battles with the Germans. Poland's military assets were in the right places to strike Germany, and in the wrong places to defend Poland from invasion. Hitler saw the Polish intent and struck first.

The conventional wisdom is, Hitler was an asshole and attacked Russia for no reason.

The Russians say (and confirm what Hitler said) Stalin intended to attack Germany, and placed the Russian army close to the intended targets. Hitler saw the threat and attacked first. Manstein notes Britain had a puissant army The Germans expected to crush with little trouble, whikle Stalin had a large army along Germanys Polish border.
