Volunteer program -- question

I submitted to be part of the Volunteer Editor program. I know it's an unwieldly list, but someone was kind enough to nominate me as Best Editor this year and I had to decline because I wasn't part of the VE program. So -- I submitted and was wondering if anyone knows how long it takes to be approved/accepted? I tried searching the list to see if I was on it but the search function is terrible. I assumed I'd get an email or PM about it but nothing so far. Anyway, thanks for the help.

You can add your name to the thread each month for available editors. State any parameters you have to make it easier for authors.

From what I know, the VE program hasn't been functional for a few years now. There's no way to update the list as is, and many on it haven't been on the site for a long time.

Left unaddressed is whether you have to be a VE to be nominated for best editor here. Do you?

That's sort of rough for a program that's been dead in the water for years.

You can be an active volunteer editor without the program itself. Replying to requests for help, posting in the available editor thread, answering editing/writing questions in the forum and doing the edits themselves are all ways to remain active.

To answer your question, albeit somewhat indirectly, I did a quick check of the first couple of pages of VEs and I could find nobody accepted on to the list later than 5th November 2010. As it says the newest members are at the top of the list ...

Quite a few of us are. I sometimes wonder about the usefulness of a self-selected list anyway. Does it offer misleading endorsement of some of its members? At least on here you know we are all, sorry - almost all, amateurs at erotica editing.

Thanks.

I was asking because I received an email from Laurel asking if I was in the VE program since I was nominated. I edited for several people last year, but hadn't been in the VE or the monthly sticky list, but I'll start doing that now. Anyway, I told her I wasn't in the program, which apparently rendered me ineligible. If being in the VE program is a requirement for a Best Editor nomination, that doesn't seem quite fair, although if being on the monthly list counts, that's a start.

Yes, that was what I was querying as well. If the program is virtually defunct and new editors aren't able to sign up for it, I don't think it should be a criteria for eligibility for the contest. But then there's so much that's screwy about the "contests" here.

Oddly enough, I just checked and had an email saying I was added to the Volunteer Editors program. Go figure. Yes, many things are odd and delayed around here, but Laurel does seem to be making an effort to catch things up. This is one particular instance, though, where it might be better to scrap the idea and start over.

They did that a few years ago, but it didn't help.

Until they have a system for removing inactive editors it will never work. I also use another site where every two weeks when a VE logs in it asks for current availability and that helps a lot. Every few weeks there is an automated sweep and any editor who has not visited the site since the last sweep is reduced to "Temporarily Unavailable" status and does not come up on the list. Visiting the site again then triggers the availability question.

That is why we have a monthly sticky for "Available Editors" at the top of this forum.

It took Laurel and Manu about 2 weeks to approve me for the VE program. I'm glad to see that your approval arrived however, belatedly of the nomination. Keep working diligently for the authors and it will come around again.

VE list updated

This has been updated to all new VE's as of January 1, 2011. It looks like PennLady sparked a nerve under Laurel and Manu to get some more VE's underway for the possible nominee submissions. I think she should have another shot at it as many VE's didn't realize that the program was still active.

LadyCallah, just a whisper in your ear. Links to other websites - except personal authors' sites - are strictly forbidden on the lit forums.

Two points:

Being "fair" isn't a criterion I would apply to any competition. The year I broke the women's world record for the half mile (athletics) I thought it was most unfair that nobody would recognise it, just because I am a man.

Second, the monthly list on this forum is entirely unofficial and carries no weight with the people who own this site and run those competitions.
