Voices in my Head Idea

A character in a story I read made brief mention of an interesting theory about gods. She made the rather outlandish suggestion that when man first became intelligent and developed consciousness, the voices in their head were mistakenly thought to be gods (as opposed to just being thoughts). I've occasionally seen MC stories where an MCer can speak in a person's head and that person would think it was their own mental voice, but I have an idea that goes much further.

What if the voices in your head *were* not your own consciousness. Instead, your consciousness does not involve language at all. Your behavior would still tend to match the voices because the ideas from those voices would influence your actions. Now, the entities speaking in your head deliberately choose to try to react to what happens to you. And the personality of those voices would be relatively consistent since the speakers would be the same.

Now, some entity X that wasn't a voice before takes the place of those entities. Surely you'd have a sort of bad vibe, but it couldn't go beyond that because your thoughts created from an outside source.

I think this would be difficult to write properly but it would be an interesting story to read and an interesting exercise for a writer who wished for a bit of a challenge. The interesting thing would be that the character would perhaps resist and perform actions which are not in accordance with the character's thoughts. But this is difficult to do at best. If you make a choice (in your head) to do something, you tend to do it unless you change your mind.
