a great idea for times of pandemic...

But how do you hold a virtual after party?
And what happens after?

I can't really understand why everyone is rushing to embrace the pandemic concept as a story idea. After it's over, nobody will want to read it, to be reminded of it.

That said, if you want to embrace a futuristic concept, since you've already gone "virtual porn ...er, prom" then you might as well embrace a virtual reality after party. Go full on "ready player one" with a second-life virtual landscape, "VR suits," This technology is out there already, it's just more expensive than most can handle. However, based on how much some pay for prom dress, tux, and limo, maybe it'll be a wash. Red light district is another VR location where adults can have a sexual romp, or just party. Of course, it doesn't work well if the parentals know what's going on. Slightly easier to spike the punch bowl. Geeks suddenly become everyone's favorite friend to ask "how to do..."

In a sense, most VR is where people let out their inhibitions more. As in Ready, Player One" people aren't content with being themselves. In this regard, you could bring almost any and every flavor of fetish into play. Werewolves, celebrities, older/younger, sex change, gang bangs, etc. It's like a costume party, only it's supposed to be where everyone knows everyone else (it's supposed to be prom party invite only, unless someone figures out how to crash the party... )

So, maybe they rent a VR room hosted by one of these "special" places. The parentals attend a VR graduation ceremony, but naively think that's as far as it's going to go. They think "it's all virtual, so anything done won't have any consequences." Of course it's still lockdown, so the parentals will be in the house too.

Oh, because the geeks/nerds saved the prom, they, instead of the jock/cheerleaders get the king and queen of the prom.

...Beyond that I got nothing. Definitely not a short story concept.

Just to clarify, why I thought it's not a short story concept, because if you make it only about two people who go on webcam to "celebrate" their prom, then it's not about a prom, and more about two people getting it on by webcam. If that's what you want, then don't oversell it as a "prom" or "afterparty."

I'd make it about ten to fifteen pages long, introduce two main characters, have them interact with a couple other people, then hand it off to two other main characters, on and on, but always coming back to the hub "prom" before handing it off to another couple. That's how I'd do it, but I'm adventurous and like challenges.

interesting comment. We'll see if it is true.

-snip-.

This is our Spanish Flu, our Great Depression, our Black Death, and while it ain’t pleasant it’s gonna be one part of what drives world culture for a generation or three IMO. Recognizing that & forecasting where it’ll take us? That’s storytelling, again IMO.

That said, I’m not writing around that plot point, personally, any more’n I am 9-11 or the Tet Offensive or Hurtgen Forest.

While those poignant events were critical to social events of the day, and while they MAY effect a generation or three, people read erotic stories for reasons of getting aroused, not to be reminded of dire and stressful times.Which brings to mind another point.

OP, were you seeking to make a "Great Expectations" kind of story, or one about sex? I get into locked mode that every story idea posted is meant to involve sex as an end to any means. I forgot that a story idea can be any story concept, even non-erotic.

I don't know of anybody that really reflects on the Spanish flu, or thinks about what that generation had to go through to survive it. As far as I know, while my grandparent's generation was extremely frugal about spending after the great depression, my mother's and father's generation was completely opposite to that concept, so, as far as far ranging effects...

Obviously the options are limited, maybe a few couples hook up and have cyber sex via their webcams, but Bobby noticed that his younger sister who is graduating is a bit depressed about the whole idea. Being close as they are, he finally gets out of her that she was planning on going to prom with Seth and to lose her virginity, now everything is up in the air and she is frustrated.

Bobby then arranges a prom of her own for his sister. He cleans out the basement, arranges some lights, gets the music going, buys some alcohol and asks his sister to prom. She is delighted at his efforts and they dance the night away. As it gets later and they get a bit drunk there is still the issue of her virginity...

It’s a situation to be explored, that’s all, something necessitating (or permitting ;)) novel behaviour. That’s nothing new to literature.

Consider Boccaccio’s classic book of short stories, The Decameron. Set in the time of the Black Death, it’s still read 500 years later. There are as well any number of superb stories set in wartime - War and Peace, Catch 22, Slaughterhouse Five and For Whom the Bell Tolls, just for starters. Yeah, those are all novels vice short stories, but the principle holds and there are good shorts written in wartime settings.

Nobody is going to remember sickness and misery and killing with any fondness, but I think the periods offer powerful frames on which to hang stories.

The one that occurred to me was A Tale of Two Cities- written about 150 years after the French Revolution, still read another 150+ years later. Not to mention Les Miz... because that's such a cheerful setting.

The majority of stories I'm aware of would be horrible to live in. The 'classics', even most mary-sue or marty-stu type stories that are the author's personal fantasies of existing in another's world are typically full of pain & suffering.

I’ll take a stab at it...

So because they can’t have a prom a group of friends decide to dress up and have a group Zoom party. They all have their rented tuxedos and dresses so they don’t want them to go to waste.

Mark’s mom thinks the idea is really great because she knows how sad and lonely her son has been. She helps him look his best before the ‘Prom’. She can hear music while she’s watching TV downstairs, but after a little while the music turns off. She is surprised because it seems early, the party was supposed to go until midnight. Mom knocks on his door and finds him at his computer dressed in his Tux and surfing some page instead of being on the Zoom call with his friends. She also notices a bottle of whiskey next to him with a glass.

They talk for a bit, he confides how sad he is because this was supposed to be a big night for him and he was looking forward to his date with Jessica. Mom understand, she thinks she knows what he’s talking about, and makes a joke about safe sex. She also acknowledges the booze in his room but says that it’s ok, she drank on her Prom too. Then she says she has an idea and decides to come back.

Her husband is in bed getting ready to go to sleep when she comes in. She explains what’s happening and quickly changes in to a dress that she bought years ago but never wore. It’s a racy dress that was meant for a night out with her husband but she thought it was a bit too revealing at the time. When she returns she tells her husband not to wait up.

She returns to sons room and he is surprised by her outfit but she explains that while she can’t give him a prom at least she can give him a dance. She tells him to put music back on and then pours them each a drink.

They dance for a little and he is clearly drunk. She teases him that it’s been a long time since she’s been alone in a drunk guys bedroom. He isn’t thinking straight and his hands slide down to her ass while they dance.

‘Oh my! Are you putting the moves on me?’

One of his hands comes around her hip and up her body cupping her breast. He leans in and kisses her while massaging her breast and ass. She squirms at first but then kisses him back, moaning into his mouth. It’s been a long time since her husband pawed are her body like that and she was enjoying it. The alcohol had gotten to her as well.

Her hands start exploring his chest and she realizes how fit her son is and the combination of the alcohol and the intimacy starts overtaking her common sense. She unzips his pants and pulls out his cock, slowly and gently massaging it with her hand before lowering herself to her knees. She hasn’t given her husband a blowjob in years but she always liked it. It made her feel so sexy being on her knees worshipping a big hard cock with her mouth and hands.

Maybe there is a way for the zoom session to become unmuted so that his friends hear him panting and grunting while she suck him. They start cheering him on, thinking that he is jerking off. Mom can’t believe that she is being cheered on by his friends, if they only knew.
