In my latest McManuscript (would you like fries with that?) I have some heavy duty hardcore violence planned for the bad guys... and one of the good guys. None is directed towards women and I'll try to keep it as tame as possible. If you are familiar with the story you know it's not violence for the sake of violence.

My question is are there guidelines as to what is acceptable or not in the way of violent content. I've hunted but can't find a guideline. I don't want this chapter to end up in the extreme section and would like to be able to just write it the way it feels right.

Can anyone help me out here?

Like you, I know of no guidelines on this matter. My own take on this would be that if the violence is relevant to the story, and is not gratuitous, go for it.

Just my two pennorth.

A manuscript that I am working upon at the present includes both sexual content
:)eek: How did that get in there?)
as well as violence.

The violence enters as a part of a once popular sport, so I never considered it a problem, before.

Now, you’ve started me thinking.

:)rolleyes: You OUGHT to be sorry! :( )

If it's part of the plot, it's part of the plot. Sounds like you're writing more than just a regular 'stroke' story. More power to ya.

I've read some violent stories on here. Some were shit and some were gems. There seems to be no take on violence.

Is the violence graphic? Descriptions of blood and other sick things? If you just keep to the facts rather than gory descriptions, I don't think you should have a problem with it.

My advice is to write it like you want to, submit and pray like hell that it gets accepted. That's what I did with one of my stories which was about a psychic character. (It's posted and in my sig. line if you're interested.)

Good luck with your story. :)

I agree there seem to be no overt rules about violence, except that if it's torture or murder in detail, violent rape, and etc. it will go to extreme. So I'd say for murder to pass, it would have to be neat and clean (more agatha christie, perry mason), than Brian de Palma or Bret Ellis.

Unfortunately(with respect to variety), most categories are defined as 'consensual', e.g, SM. So that limits violence. The lady in SM has to want to be whipped and get off on it; so how bad can it be? You might say the rule is that the SM be no more than transiently criminal (see next para)---she will end up 'getting off ' and not pressing charges.

The 'nonconsensual' category is a bit vaguely defined, but the formula is that initial violence gives way to frenzied lovemaking where the (initial) victim comes and then
walks away--legs awkwardly apart-- with a grin on her face. There are a few odd exceptions like Roscoe Rathbone's story of the Japanes lesbian forced to perform various acts. (The infamous SUV story didn't fit, but was voluntarily withdrawn, so the rule in force is hard to tell.)

On Lit you can write about rape for entertainment purposes. A severe trashing should not upset anybody.

This is after all a site for adults. Write whatever you want to. If your story involves someone getting the Christmas beaten out of him or her, then so be it. If that's what it takes to make the story what you want to tell, then by all means.

If there is just alot of blood and gore for blood and gore's sake, I think the readers will take notice and won't appriciate it as much (or the other way around, if they're that kind of pepole).

How graphic you want to go is entirely up to you. Again, how you think your readers will react might be something to consider. But if you think you know what you're doing, you need not ask, just write what comes to you.

Thanks for your replies folks.

I'll never put in a passage with violence just for the sake of it. The story I'm writing at the moment is the second chapter of The Real Estate Connection which is an idea I have beenb kicking around for a while. It involves an ex mercenary who fought in the drug wars and a heap of other characters who end up interacting in the most interesting ways.

The violence is an integral part of the story line and I know if I chop it the story is going to fall over big time. It is now more a matter of the degree of violence. Do I give it a tame PG13 rating or a solid R rating? I guess I'll have to just write the sucker and see. The only reference I can give you folks as to what sort of content it will have is my last story...

Educating the Capo.

Anyway... thank you for the input.

Just gave your 'Educating the Capo' two-parter a quick read through, and for my money your level of violence is just fine. I'd go with what feels right for the story and it will all work out. If the story's intense, then dumbing down the violence will feel wrong - And vice versa.

Let us know when it's done, I'm sure you'll get a bunch of helpful feedback from these folks.

Raph, who must get around to writing that cyberpunk erotica one of these days.
