G'day

We need help with our new digital (still) camera....

It takes movies as well, but in quicktimes .mov format, which is a space consuming bastard......

Anyone know of a freeware/shareware program that will convert them to wmv format and allow editing as well?

Any help much appreciated, a 1 minute clip of my love giving a great headjob is worth 14 mb, but it could be shared if it was less than 1 mb!!!!!!;)

I don't have a software by name to recomend but I would say looking at www.download.com or at www.tucows.com might be a good place to start, lots of shareware at each .....

Nope, I tried them both, and either the feature I want is buried in the detail or I just plain missed it, but I tried there first, along with all the other software site I know of.........:(

Video authoring utilities.

Here are two which work well.

At http://www.gromada.com You will find Video Match which does a fine job of translating amongst many popular video codec types. It will do the specific translation and compression you seek. I use it all the time.

At http://www.divx.com/ You will find Divx. Which may be the best video compression codec out there. Which is not exactly what you are seeking, but may be better.

All of this stuff gets rather propellor~heady in a hurry. Just jingle if you wish for some pointers on the use of either tool.

Best wishes.

oops... wait a minute. Hold the fort.

You said quicktime as in .mov files. I rarely work with quicktime. Videomatch does not accept those files for input. Let me find that tool and report back.

Also, a one minute movie will never get to 1Mb, and still be worth seeing. Your current file size does not seem too unreasonable. But some of the other codecs may well be more thrifty.

sorry for the bad advice above.

This page illustrates the process for quicktime to avi format translations:

Follow their advice and you should be good to go.

Thankyou sir, your help as been invaluable.......

I have managed to convert and am now working my way through compressions etc, but it was that hurdle of getting it out of Quicktime that had me stumped!
I consider myself a high end user, and have built my last 3 pcs, but the video format is (apart from downloading and watching porn :D) is fairly new to us......

Thanks again,

Raven & Akasha :)

Rad tools

Hey you bet.

I never doubted your skill level. Merely wishing to do this sort of conversion spoke volumes. The tools are out there, but they are hidden away in odd nooks and crannies.

Quicktime is an peculiar one to deal with. I ran an experiment here with the fine program from rad tools. It worked perfectly. It will compress your output massively. Please be judicious. Your output will suffer.

If you wish to do further editing, Videomatch seems the better tool. It will do fades and blendings nicely. And also allows you to add in jpg images for titles and such.

Beyond that you may wish to exploit the high end and very pricey
pro video editors available. On those there are too many to suggest in this setting.

Still working on the compression aspect, but making (some) progress......:)
My first attempt turned 2 14mb Mov files into a 400mb avi file, so I am not there yet, but at least I am now on the right track...

Expreimentation should fix the issue for.....

BTW I grabbed both those programs, and they will both be very useful, thanks!

Still working

Hey great. Yes indeed Experimentation is now the key to success. I am delighted you found the right mix of tools for your needs.

Deciding on the right compression level is a bit dodgy, erring on the side of larger is better seems to pay of nicely. You will no doubt notice that the various codecs available can achive remarkably different results (ceterus paribus).

Yeah, I noticed that my 1.32 G AVI file is a 263M MPG file... I need to be able to squash the MPG or AVI files down to 10 M - I have less than stellar results with zip based apps in the past. Would lowering the frame rate in the webcam make that much of a difference if I am including audio?

I know the above sounds almost like I know what I'm talking about but really I'm just asking stupid questions based on those things I see in the program that I can change - and I know that I can royally F*ck the program if I change the wrong thing without understanding what I am doing...
