Verbal Abuse

is there a point to this or are you just asking.....like is your ex being as ass again?? hopefully not but, i seem to remember a post earlier...

Verbal abuse is a tough thing to define.
For me, it doesn't exist unless the person speaking/yelling inherently has more power, and exercises it, over the one on the receiving end.

For instance--a parent can verbally abuse a child. A boss can verbally abuse an employee, as they hold the power of the paycheck. A spouse, however, cannot verbally abuse their spouse unless it is secondary to physical abuse--something that gives them physical power/control over the recipient.

In other words, if s/he doesn't hit you or otherwise control you, then there's no reason you have to put up with it. In that case, they're just being an asshole, and you should stop taking it. But it isn't abuse, it's just talking shit.

JMO, of course.

What do you consider to be a definition for this type of abuse? Is it just yelling at someone? Is it calling someone names? Is it constant nattering over anything and everything? Is it swearing at someone??
Ever verbally abused or been verbally abused by someone?

I get it every single day I'm at work and after a while it's like water off a ducks back but for the first few months it's hard to take.

We have a saying where I work "it's not a proper day at work until someone calls you a cunt".

I choose NOT to answer "serious" questions this evening. It might cause me to have a drink.

Ya, me too. I prefer to have a drink without provocation.:)

i agree with risia except the part of saying a spouse couldn't verbally abuse you ... i think its possible when a spouse has a power/hold over you ... sometimes that can be true even without physical abuse

i've never been verbally abused though just verbally insulted :)

Not about the power I think.
Verbal abuse exists when there is malicious intent behind the words.
Someone saying something to hurt deliberately.
They don't have to swear or yell. Sometimes, it's only a whisper that hurts.
