As with any group of regulars anywhere, from pubs to bulletin boards, from Mods to Geeks, I guess there is a shorthand that develops.

It's all Geek to me ...

I liked it better without the R <g>

I also like the fact that we post our cultural differences without even noticing it. It just occurred to me that someone started a thread titled "Migraine."

A no brainer.

Except MP is reading that as "my-graine" and Coggie is reading it as "me-graine."

Relativity made cheap :)

If you knew absolutely nothing about this individual, what would you assume? My original assumption was that this person was not a native English speaker. My second assumption was that this was a juvenile.

This is a direct quote from a roleplaying thread. The individual who produced this has assured me that high school was completed in an American city, English is the native language, and that the age of majority has been reached. After some discussion, I've concluded that this is the best this poster can do. The fault in this instance lies with the education system and the poster for not making the best use of it that is possible.

This is an extreme example of why bad spelling, punctuation, and grammar is disrespectful of other people. It's also an extreme example of why people judge you based on your posting.

Eye wants eight a peace of stake that had too kinds of sos inn it. The stake was sew hard two swallow because their were two many spices. Eye almost, butt naught quite, through up.

There are more, less extreme examples, of why giving your post a once over before pressing the submit button might be a good idea. Mostly in the Personals section.

I think people forget that this isn't a chat room. This is a bulletin board and it doesn't have to be said extremely quickly. Not only that, it's here to stay, inasmuch as these things stick around. Re-reading what you just wrote will catch the stupid errors that make posts illegible.

Not everyone does it, in fact, very few people actually post error ridden messages without thinking about what they're doing. There are one or two, however, whose fingers move faster than they ought to, and they don't edit themselves, just post.

I re-read everything I stick up, sometimes I don't catch it until after I've hit the submit button, and if I think it's unclear, or my vanity is pricked, I will edit it to correct the mistake. No, I don't catch everything, not everyone will, but I do try to spell as correctly as I can, to punctuate and use grammar correctly. This is the only method I have for assuring that I am not misunderstood. Which I usually am anyway. But that usually has to do with poor phraseology.

Anyway. If you have hotmail it has a spellchecker embedded in it. I think Yahoo does too, but I don't use it often enough to notice. These things are independent of you harddrive and what's on it.

That quote can't be for real KM. If it is I'd imagine its author is non English speaking. If not, then I dread to think any further.

KM - Someone recently asked you what the line in your signature means. I doubt it's an example of poor spelling skills, but it means nothing to me either. I'm not asking you to translate but its interesting to note in the context of this conversation.

Waysalay Eeringlay Atay Inefay Alemay Ssay

When I read the quote you used above from a roleplay, my first reaction was that it must be olde English and that you were going to make some point about how language evolves. ;)

I'm enjoying the conversation on this thread, though I have nothing to add. I agree with points being made by DarlingBri, Ally C and KM. Although it may be too much to expect great erudition, at least we can treat one another with good spelling and grammar as well as a modicum of clarity.

Apparently...

It's

"Always leering at fine male asses" in pig latin.

I had to ask, as well :)

KM, I'm sure he's a lovely bloke if you say so, but honestly, how can you even tell?

That's appalling. Ye gad.

Well, he's always been nice even in his roleplay when he's supposed to be a bad guy. He is just almost indecipherable.

*blushing* Ah, I hate to admit to ignorance... but I don't know any latin. Everyone else was doing latin quotes here and there, so I did the only latin I know. And I don't know it very well.

Ignorance? Hardly. I don't "know" any Latin either. I can quote a Latin phrase or two, but I can't read it or speak it. I think they call it a "dead language" for a reason.

I have a little sister who is a Classics scholar. She actually speaks it fluently. To whom, I'm not sure.

It's only a "dead language" to those who can't speak it. English isn't dead yet, but is showing signs of decay.

LMAO, jeez. I thought it was some classy Welsh quote.

Get over it folks. Most respondents here are not the ones targeted by the spelling issue, which if you remember was only one of a number of points. Even then, no one asked for perfection. Try a little, and deal with it.

End of discussion?

Resurrected for discussion. Any takers?

What? New blood, old thread, more hacking at each other. Could be fun.

I imagine DB feels the same about spelling, punctuation, and grammar that I do. I don't expect nor require everyone to have perfect spelling, punctuation, and grammar. I do wish that everyone would at least put some effort into it

you must hate me KillerMuffin ... sorry :)

Generally speaking, when KM hates you, you'll know for sure :)

Her aim is deadly and she's loaded for idiots.

The Devil wants to know

He said to ask why you have an oxymoron under your title?

I gave up really trying to correct anybody's spelling a while back. If they haven't learned by the time they're old enough to be here I sure as fuck ain't gonna change them.

Plus, it just makes me look like an asshole, which I really don't mind, but with all the fragile egos around here I didn't want to be the one that sends somebody over the edge for something as minor as i before e, except after c.

Speaking from experience, she doesn't even have to hate you.
All it takes is minor irritation, her toward you.

My advice: better practice those duck and cover maneuvers if you're liable to be tangling with her.

(Hi, Bri. Missed you.)

You think "Brit Wit" is an oxymoron?

It's not. It's merely an export that perishes when exposed to mainstream American culture.

Speaking of oxymorons...

America has a culture. So does England. The Brits are masters of wit. It is not, however, something Americans typically understand. That's because it's typically understated, which Americans typically are not.

I'm finding it mildly amusing that an American expatriot would chose "Brit Wit" as her title. She has named her self after a French cheese, as well.

I'm certin that there is an understated point in there somewhere, but I guess I'm just too American to find it.
