It would seem the new global tariffs are having a far reaching effect.

About four thousand km's to the south of the Australian mainland, near Antarctica, lies Heard Island. It has incurred the wrath of a particular world 'leader' by having a ten percent tariff placed upon it...the same as Australia proper. "What the hell is this bloke on about?" has been part of the general conversation of the inhabitants.

Vexed beyond belief, the local population has panicked, particularly in relation to their fishing industry. They will usually go to sea and fish for days at a time and return with a large catch of fish. This is not without its risks: they need to negotiate horrendous conditions....freezing temps and hurricane force winds, run the gauntlet of other unsavoury locals such as sharks and sea lions and deal with the exhaustion of it all. Much confusion has surfaced with regard to the catch they return with. Primarily the catch is used for local consumption....there is rarely any surplus, but if there were, would it be subject to the new tariff should they they decide to export it?

Perhaps the government in Canberra could send a representative to Heard to reassure the population there that they will be included in any negotiations re the broader tariff placed on Oz. The government is fired up already about the tariff, diplomacy is the order of the day though....for now. However, the events pertaining to Heard Island, might push it over the edge.
