I follow George Takei on Facebook, and loved this pic he posted today:

If you don't want the link, it's a picture of scientist Neil DeGrasse Tyson and the caption is: "If moonlight is really sunlight, why doesn't it kill vampires?"

Love that, and makes me laugh because I actually touched on that in a vampire story I wrote. Hehe.

Vampires actually work all shifts, and there are psychic vampires that feed off your contentment and joy and peace of mind.

Thanks for explaining, I'd cut my hand off before I will ever log on to to anyone's face book.

Yeah this is a damn good point PL. Sorta demonstrates that there are holes in most mythologies like this. I think little things like this are causing our classic monsters to move from scare spectrum to others like romance and sci fi.

Which is why I think I like/fear those characters that we can't explain away. Though, you still gotta love the classics.

I think your hand is safe, as that is not how Facebook works.

Look, you don't like it, fine, but some of us have found useful/fun things about it.

I guess vampires could come out on new moon nights or something. You can explain this away, though, with magic or whatever. Perhaps it's something in the fact that the light is reflected that makes it safe for vampires.

I don't know that I find vampires scary, exactly, but a scary story with something creeping around or going bump in the night (which might be a vampire), that works for an entertaining scare.

If I was writing a science-y vampire story I'd go with "same reason we don't get sunburned by moonlight"...

Yea though I scramble through the valley of shadows, I will fear no evil, for I carry a .45 1911.

With silver bullets dipped in garlic.

Actually, vampirism is real, but it goes by a different name: rabies. The symptoms for both diseases are the same, but have been exaggerated or romanticized by dramatic license for vampirism.

Symptoms:

Manic rages, aggression, dementia.

Violent behavior characterized by biting and scratching.

Disease transmission from bites.

Immunity to pain, especially near infected bite marks.

Extraordinary strength and speed. The victim has no pain threshold, so warning pain from injury or muscle strain doesn't deter them.

Hydrophobia: fear of water. Legendary vampires were said to be unable to cross running water. Dracula and later vampires got around this by sleeping in dirt filled coffins.

Light and noise sensitivity. Rabies victims will feel extreme pain from bright or flashing lights and loud noises. This causes them to be nocturnal. They would also avoid churches and other public gatherings because of noise like church bells that could be heard for miles.

Gaunt pale sickly appearance with bad smell. Rabies victims are extremely ill, skip eating, vomit, avoid sunlight, and neglect hygiene. It doesn't take long for them to look and smell like a walking corpse.

It's not entertaining when it's not a story.
Vampire mythos allows real bloodsuckers a free pass.
Their night bumps are just gross.
