I will be alone in body but not in spirit, my lover and I will most probably spend part of the day on line and the phone, and then I will go to the local club and have fun with my best friend. A few drinks, a game of pool and some loud music will help take my mind off things

I really don't think you're being an ass.
BUT, (you knew there had to be one) if i were your sister, i'd feel even worse. It's not fun spending Valentine's Day alone and add to that the guilt that your brother-in-law is spending the day alone because your sister feels bad for you. I'd rather just go about the day and treat it like any other day, forget the holiday even exists.
