I am a long time reader. I want to add a chapter to an existing story line. There have been other stories with "alternate endings".

The original author is here:
https://www.literotica.com/authors/bothways123/works/stories

My attempts to contact the author have been completely unsuccessful. I've left my email in comments (ya, not good practice, but its a throw away account). I've sent email via Lit several times. No response to either. Having made a good faith effort, I feel like I've been honest and open. My plan is to submit a story in the next few days.

A lack of response is NOT the same as obtaining approval. No one is under any obligation at all to respond to you.

Continuing someone else's story without their consent is wildly inappropriate.

eta: especially when the author in question has published within the past friggin' week!

Sometimes a "good faith effort," just isn't enough. You don't have the consent of the writer to take their characters, and although it probably doesn't rise to the level of actual copyright infringement, it's certainly bad form.

I'll also note that @bothways123 has a story that was just published four days ago, so it's not even like they've abandoned writing here.

If you don't get the explicit permission of the original writer, you should keep your fanfic to yourself.

Do not do this.

Edit: as for being honest and open, does your story open with a disclaimer saying "these characters were created by bothways123. I have sought but not received permission to use them in this work."? Because if not, you're not being open and honest with the audience.

Absolutely no. It appears that this author is still writing and publishing. He has no responsibility to respond. The fact that he hasn't responded to your inquiry should tell you that he has no desire to correspond with you and does not want you to add to one of his stories. As crookedletter said, "Write your own story."

Ladies, gentlemen, and you rare and precious enbies, time is a flat circle and we have returned to this conversation again after so many months of pending lamentations and AI rejections. It's almost a welcome change of pace!

Lift up your glasses. We have been here before, and we shall be again.

There should really be more stickies in this forum, which we could simply link to all the people who are new to all this. There are like five recurring topics that should be covered.

It's the Battlestar Galactica of AH topics.

I agree with everyone else here. Unless you have actual approval, it's not okay. A lack of response is not approval. Especially if they're an active site member. If you want to write it for yourself and never post it, go for it. The problem is posting it. I'm not a legal expert, but my understanding is that even fanfiction is often illegal, it's just popular authors don't bother(thinking of Harry Potter fan fiction, which is very popular). I might be wrong about that. Either way, the site won't post it, nor should they.

Huh, and in your earlier thread, you asked that the entire site change its clock so that new stories could be released daily on a schedule that better suits your particular want.

Thank you for reinforcing the stereotype that us Americans are a bunch of self-centered a-holes. I didn't get that enough already.

As you can tell from the other comments, this topic has been covered many times in previous threads.

The answer is that you should not write a continuation of another Literotica author's story, or use that author's characters, without express permission. A good faith attempt to get permission is not enough.

The Site owners have said, specifically, that you should get permission before you do this.

If someone wrote a story using my characters without permission, I don't think I'd get mad about it. I'd just write a 750 word followup, in which one of the characters wakes up and tells their partner, "I just had the stupidest dream..."
I read a story on here where an author did this to themselves. Well not 750 words, but the start of the followup used "I had this dumb dream" to retcon the last several chapters of the previous story. Honestly not the worst way to deal with having written an ending you really don't like.
