Using ordered lists in a story

So I was surprised to work out that:

<ol><li>item 1</li><li>item 2</li></ol>

actually is supported.

But, the numbered bullets are left justified outside of the page when I preview the work.

Is there any chance that this gets sorted out when the work is actually published? Or is it not really supported at all?

In case you were wondering, it’s for a set of rules, relating to a special gathering.

Again, as with any formatting issue, my solution is to submit as a Word doc. None of my formatting, including ordered lists, has been affected once I've done that. I've never previewed anything.

I mention this because my lists have been properly indented when published, just like in Word. So the site supports that, if you can stumble on the correct html line. Or? Just type it in Word, then upload.

Thanks - I don’t really want to work in Word.

It would be nice if HTML is supported it actually worked.

Thanks anyway for the reply.

I once tried using the color html tags - just for some chunks of text that needed to be called out, and looked great in bold+dark-gray, but crummy in all standard permutations of bold/italic/underline (TOO LOUD or too quiet). It was beautiful in the previewer, but then the story was rejected because of formatting tags. I've never tried the Word upload, do they allow color there?

That, I can't help with. Honestly, if I was reading a Lit story and I came across a multicolored passage, I'd immediately find another story. That would distract me as a reader.

Like I said, dark-gray - just to make it clearly differentiated from the rest of the text. It was very tasteful, I promise ;)

I understand why they don't want colors, because of different skins, etc. But the result is that I have these blocks of bold-italic (dialogue the reader gets to understand, but the 'other person in the room' doesn't because they don't know the language) that are very ugly. I guess I should have re-written it somehow, but honestly it worked so well when I had just a bit more flexibility with the formatting...

@daddyanal, if @Voboy is feeling generous (I bet he is) and remembers which story of his it was that used ordered lists, you can look at its source and see what it converted to for the published version.

then you’d have more info to try out your tags. Good luck

You could try to add style to the ol tag. I think the CSS property is list-style-position
A Google search for "CSS for ol tag" should give you some infos

It's the "addenda" material to my SF series. I think it's called "Dry, No Lube: Appendices" or some such. It's just a jumble of notes and continuity material some readers asked me about.

My story “Predators” has a numbered list in it, on page 11. But like Voboy I used Word to format and submitted that and the posted version is fine. I’m not at my computer so can’t easily pull up the source right now.

You could use < text here > as tags for snippets of dialogue that are in another language and not everyone understands. I've seen it used that way in comics.

No, any other formatting than those allowed will be left out of those allowed.

The Lit CSS is GOD, there is no changing it or modifying it. Any story that tries will be rejected.

This is what my ordered list translates into in the page source that Lit produces.

Hi all,

Thanks for the tips. I just used the standard mark-up and added a note to the admins saying there was an ordered list and could they maybe take a look at it.

In published form it’s totally fine, see:

Emily’s Shorts - You Spin Me Round

Whether they fixed it, or it just worked, I’m not sure.
