I've published some of my stories here on Kindle, either as Kindle Select or more generally. Since I started, KDP has improved and made using it easier. In particular, you can now upload a document in docx. format directly for an ebook and it comes out well. I use the same docx. for both ebooks and paperbacks (with paperbacks having to be converted to PDF). The formatting for the ebook works well, and I use Canva for the covers.
KDP is also a fairly easy way to generate hardcovers. (Note that KDP has restrictions on cover images.)
I also use Draft2Digital for wider circulation; it converts Word documents into epub.
There how-to videos out there I can point people to.
