Use or Misuse of 'That'

I have a personal, stylistic aversion to the word 'that.' It has its place, but I find it can be overused and--worse--misused.

In reviewing one of my stories for publication, I found at least six instances of 'that' in a single paragraph. I believe that is too much for a paragraph that short and that I should avoid that in most cases.

Am I being overly critical of my grammar?

"That" is one of the "find and replace" words I always check for (over use) along with "and then" and "just". It's common words like these that become like annoying tics.

So no, I don't think you're being overly critical, but being more aware of your prose can only be a good thing.

I use this tool - https://worditout.com/word-cloud/create - as part of every story edit, it's invaluable in showing those words used to excess.

Thanks. I tend to over-write if I am not careful. I try to keep action sequences to short, direct sentences and take more time with descriptions where I can wax more lyrical. (Thank you, Mr. Hemingway.)

I will check out the link. Much appreciated.

Yep, "that" is an overused word and often can be deleted with no effect on meaning or proper grammar.

I used to over use the word 'but' in dialogue - my better half found them in the proof reads so many times that I do hope I've learned my lesson

But then, maybe not. But, you know, it is a fun word, but if it's over used maybe it looses it's punch? But, I'm still not 100% sure. It could just be my fixation with her butt, I suppose. :D
