I am very proud Englishman who also has a lot of affection and respect for the United States. I know a lot of Americans and been to the US about a dozen times. Just for a little fun, considering there are lots of Americans on here and plenty of Brits, I thought I'd start a thread and see how many interesting responses I get.

In recent history (last 2-300 years), there are only 2 countries (IMO) that could qualify to the the greatest country in the world - ever, the USA and the United Kingdom (or Great Britain if you like). So what reasons can you give to support each case for each country?

To start the ball rolling, I thought I would list a couple of reasons for the USA being the greatest. They don't necessarily have to be serious and you can argue for the other country, just be interesting!

Sorry, but the greatest country over the past few hundred years has been Germany.

No question about it.

You know those eugenics programmes they used to have back before WW2? Are we TOTALLY sure they were a bad idea?

Why do countries with the word United in their name have such histories of divisiveness?

For the same reason that countries that have/had 'Democratic' in their name weren't/aren't democratic. To try to convince the people to believe something they know is untrue.

It's a tie.

The U.S. was the first big republic in history, and proved that republican government could work on a larger scale than a city-state or Switzerland or the Netherlands. That's quite an accomplishment.

Berlin has a yearly sex parade.

Plus, they've tried to take over the world TWICE in 100 years.

...and they make the best cars, they burn jews in furnaces and the women are really quite a lot kinkier than US or UK grrls.
