US accuses russia of crimes that go beyond the war crimes determined last year
The U.S. has formally determined that Russia has committed “crimes against humanity” in its war with Ukraine, Vice President Kamala Harris said Saturday, adding that Washington is "troubled that Beijing had deepened its relationship with Moscow" since the invasion.

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference in Germany, Harris said, “We have examined the evidence. We know the legal standards. And there is no doubt. These are crimes against humanity.”
"You will be held to account,” Harris said. She also stressed the need to uphold international rules and norms, adding that "we must stay strong" because if Russian President Vladimir Putin were to succeed with his attack "other nations could feel emboldened to follow his example.”

I had thought Russia had reformed since the bad old days of the Evil Empire. What a disappointment Russia has become under Putin!

War ??
Is Ukraine killing Russians outside its borders ??

We'll be invading them through Ukraine, eventually.

Special Forces "advisors" by summer. A Fall bombing campaign. Then ground forces.

All the while with China supplying Russia.

It's 1965 all over again.

How are you going to uncross that line?
Here's the problem from a statecraft POV. How do you reach a negotiated settlement after you've dropped the "War Crimes" bomb?

"OK Vlad, you pull out of Ukraine and we'll drop all war crimes charges."

"No reparations either."

"OK, OK, done."

Anyone think that's going to happen?

While the charges are all, or mostly, true once you make that assertion you can't retract it.

Nah...the Republicans in charge will not allow that

The difference is that the Ukrainians do not want to be conquered by Russia, and they are doing their own fighting. In Vietnam we were more interested in defending South Vietnam against Communism than most of them were interested.

Hopefully we wagged our fingers at them too. Should be about as effective as what we currently do.

The term "crimes against humanity" is supposed to impress me how ? It's what man does best.

International Criminal Court issues arrest warrant for putin (and another) for war crimes

The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant Friday for Russian President Vladimir Putin and an official in his office responsible for children's rights because of their alleged involvement in the unlawful deportation and transfer of Ukrainian children from occupied areas of Ukraine to Russia.

"There are reasonable grounds to believe that Mr. Putin bears individual criminal responsibility for the aforementioned crimes ... for having committed the acts directly, jointly with others and/or through others ... and for his failure to exercise control properly over civilian and military subordinates who committed the acts, or allowed for their commission, and who were under his effective authority and control, pursuant to superior responsibility," the ICC said in a statement.

David Scheffer, the first U.S. Ambassador at Large for War Crimes Issues, said the charges are significant for both the war in Ukraine and for the global geopolitical stage.

“This is not the first time the ICC has indicted or issued an arrest warrant for a head of state. It did so before with Bashir in Sudan and with Qaddafi in Libya," he said, referring to Omar al-Bashir, former President of Sudan and Muammar al-Qaddafi, Libya's former leader. "Henceforth, Putin will always be described as not only the President of Russia but as an indicted fugitive of the International Criminal Court as a war criminal."

Sidenote - the US is not part of nor does it recognize the jurisdiction of the ICC

thankyou for that

The International Criminal Court exists only to assert jurisdiction when a country hasn't investigated its own nationals for the most serious of offenses, and Russia hasn't done that. In the case of Afghanistan, though, the United States had investigated most of those offenses. You can argue about whether the investigations were full enough, but there's a big difference between the investigations that were conducted by the United States at the same time that Russia is claiming that it has done absolutely nothing wrong in Ukraine.

so xi met with putin, but the Japanese PM turned up in Kyiv to honour those lost to the atrocities:

Kishida placed flowers outside a church in Bucha, the town outside Kyiv that became a symbol of Russian atrocities, hours after arriving for his unexpected visit.

“I’m outraged by the cruelty," said Kishida, the first Japanese leader to enter a war zone since World War II. "I represent the Japanese citizens to express my condolences to those who lost their lives."
U.S. Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel issued a statement Tuesday saying, "Kishida stands with freedom, and Xi stands with a war criminal."
Japan has the world's largest economy after USA and China, so this action carries some weight behind it.
