US Plummets In Press Freedom Rankings

The United States plunged 14 places in the annual Press Freedom Index released by Reporters Without Borders on Wednesday. The group said it was "one of the most significant declines" in press freedom it had tracked during 2013.

The US in now ranked 46th on the RWB list, in between Romania and Haiti. It was ranked 32nd in the 2013 index. (Finland tops the entire list.)

The press freedom group was blunt in its explanation. It cited increased efforts to track down whistleblowers and the sources of leaks, mentioning Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden in particular. It also condemned the Justice Department's surveillance of reporters, and the continued leak battle facing New York Times journalist James Risen.

RWB also criticized the United Kingdom for what it said were its "disgraceful" threats against the Guardian newspaper, and for its detention of Glenn Greenwald's partner, David Miranda.

"Both the US and UK authorities seem obsessed with hunting down whistleblowers instead of adopting legislation to rein in abusive surveillance practices that negate privacy, a democratic value cherished in both countries," the group wrote.

This is where the Obama administration as failed miserably. They have perpetuated the them against us you are with us or against us attitude. I want one liberal to defend this without saying "GWB did it so it's ok." I'll wait but they can't. See with many liberals it's okay to use Gestapo tactics as long as it's for a cause they agree with. Just look at political correctness on college campuses.

It does when you punish folks for simply having a different view.

If there are no arrests or beatings, it ain't Gestapo tactics. Please don't weaken the word. Social pressure is a traditional American form of social control anyway; see Tocqueville's Democracy in America.

You are correct. I should have used different words.

Social control my left nut. Fuck social control. We need free thought.

 That has nothing whatsoever to do with "Gestapo tactics."

What's funny is conservatives have their own kind of censorship. It's called not reading.

Friday, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, a left-leaning advocacy group, announced a series of internet ads they would run across the country targeting Intelligence Committee Chairwoman Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. – a fierce defender of the Obama administration's counter-terror tactics – and against Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who told reporters Thursday he was "glad" NSA was keeping tabs on phone records.

Considering what they cited I'm not sure I consider their opinion particularly relevant. Snowden doesn't represent a declining freedom in the United States, he represents a problem that needs solving and would have happened no matter what. It's like considering America less safe because of 9/11 when really it was just as safe as it always was, shit occasionally happens.

No, the Obama Administration has done no such thing. He has repeatedly bent over backwards to keep Republicans in the fold instead of using an Us vs Them mentality. It's one of his greatest shortcomings because no amount of him trying to make peace is going to get him anything.

Also nobody says GWB did it so it's ok. We say "where was your rage when GWB did it." That's a vast difference, much of this shit didn't piss anybody off liberals included under GWB, the fact that many of these things are suddenly outrages is puzzling. Especially from people who refuse to admit they are either partisan or racist. Either answer is acceptable but to continually claim it's neither makes you a liar.

Political correctness on college campuses? You mean where it belongs and with good reason?

Wow, your first link is a Gish Gallop of selected World Nut Daily and Fox News editorials, and your second link is a whiny editorial against dat ole Political Correctness debbil.

As the philosopher Twisted Sister once said, "If that's your best, your best won't do!"

Where in any of these examples are people being arrested or persecuted for having differing views? Or are you backing off from your previous statement and admitting that you were wrong?

On the first point I have to disagree. He has made a minimal lip service efforts but the actions of his administrations are quite different. To be fair the Republicans are far worse and more combative and divisive.

On the second point college campuses should be places of free thinking. Not just for the free thinking folks on the left.

Read the other few lower down. Attacking the source is easy. Put something that shows me there is not political correctness.

Feel free to disagree, it's not even a matter of degrees. Obama has refused to throw down the gauntlet and as a result his base has become increasingly disillusioned because he doesn't have our back. He's a thrice damned Centrist.

On the second point no they should not be places of "Free thinking" whatever the hell that means. They should be places of education and only morons aren't politically correct.

To his base he will never go far enough. Radicals on either side will never be happy. I would love to know what far enough is. How much farther left would you like him to go. I would like to see a fair tax code and we can have that discussion at any time. I think you would be surprised at my opinions on that.

I guess I'm a moron in your eyes. I can live with that. I would just hate for the country to turn more conservative and have free speech be stiffed by religious thought.
