Just thought I'd start a thread for all those unusual and/or interesting words that befuddle, confound, or captivate us. Please post some of your own here...but you must also post the definition...and use it in a sentence!

I lurve to mooch!

hehe...

Moocher: To obtain by begging (Dictionary.com)

Does begging for pics and attention make me a moocher?

Due to lack of input...but knowing there are viewers....

Lurker: someone waiting in concealment.

There is obviously more than one lurker in here.

Smitten: adj 1: (used in combination) affected by something overwhelming; "conscience-smitten"; "awe-struck" [syn: stricken, struck] 2: marked by foolish or unreasoning fondness

I am smitten with the sweet taste of honey.

I am smitten with the sweet taste of honey.

How do I respond to this? If it was meant for me (*fingers crossed*)

But of course, darlin'!

abstruse

adj : difficult to penetrate; incomprehensible to one of ordinary understanding or knowledge;

"the professor's lectures were so abstruse that students tended to avoid them"

"her vagina was abstruse no matter how hard I pressed."

"Twitterpated"

Probably not in the dictionary. It means excited to the point of idiocy, especially by love/lust.

"Whenever he glanced in her direction she became so twitterpated she couldn't speak."

phoo·ey
interj.

Used to express disgust, disbelief, or contempt.

"Phooey!"

Some years ago I tired to make up a non-phonetic dictionary list. Each word had to have a sound other than the leading letter. This was the B entry.

bdellium
bdel·li·um
Pronunciation: 'de-lE-&m
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Latin, from Greek bdellion
: a gum resin similar to myrrh obtained from various trees (genus Commiphora) of the East Indies and Africa

I watched the natives gather bdellium from the trees across the way.

"Stalking horse"

Definition: A person, action, or object used to disguise a hidden motive or purpose; especially a person unaware of being used in such a fashion.

Origin: The phrase is taken from the practice of using a horse or horse-shaped blind as a screen from behind which a hunter might approach prey without clearly announcing a human presence.

Use: "Oh, I never really supported his proposal. I just used him as my stalking horse to distract the boss while I got my own signed off."

I was disturbed this morning when I realized that FLACCID and PLACID are not spelled alike. It bugs me.

Just like SHIVER. It wants to have two Vs, damn it!

swoon
intr.v. swooned, swoon·ing, swoons
To faint.
To be overwhelmed by ecstatic joy.

n.
A fainting spell; syncope. See Synonyms at blackout.
A state of ecstasy or rapture.

"bash's av always makes me swoon."

inebriate:
verb: (tr) 1. to make drunk; intoxicate. 2. to arouse emotionally; make excited.
noun: a person who is drunk, especially habitually.

The inebriate was inebriated on her person and her proffered bottle of gin.

Flipping the dictionary open I came across

foulard (foo-lard) n. [Fr] 1. A lightweight twill or plain-wovern fabric of silk or silk and cotton, usu. having a small printed design. 2. An article of dress, esp. a necktie or scarf, made of foulard.

Although the scarf was tied tightly around my wrists, the foulard material did not cut into my tender skin.

Antelucan

antelucan: pertaining to the hours just before dawn (from the Latin ante and lucanus; words related through the etymology: lucid, elucidate)

I loved it when he'd awaken and surprize me, kindling my senses for an antelucan arousal that inevitably led to my being late to the office.

I found this word recently and like its look and sound, also its etymology. But I'm not certain about my sentence above. In one of the OED's citations the phrase "antelucan devotion" made sense (prayers before dawn). Perhaps my use is too simplistic?

Perdita, nothing you say is ever simplistic!

Let me add crepuscular, which describes twilight and dawn

Frottage, a paraphilia that involves surreptitiously rubbing one's body against a stranger's, as in a crowded train or elevator for the purposes of sexual arousal and possibly orgasm.

Frottage has also come to mean any sort of sexual rubbing and friction. One who engages in frottage is a frotteur.

As in making love "Spanish" style, when the penis is placed between a woman's ample breasts. :D
